look at most of the successful "ghetto" blacks, they are either rapper/actors, athletes, or politicians, blacks who are successful in mainstream society outside of entertainment/politics are the ones who ignore "blackness" and focus on their own work and ability.
Politicians? I don't understand why you would lump politicians in this group. FYI, folks like Barack Obama, Eric Holder, Susan Rice, Clarence Thomas and even Sheila Joackson Lee had to attend the same elite/Ivy League schools that big-time White politicans had to attend to get where they're at.

Chris Rock was using this same material in his stand ups for years. I don't think Barkley will be fired. Pretty sure Bill Cosby is on board with this thinking as well.
Louis Farrakhan too.

Sure it has. Do you think the first generation of Jews spoke English very well?
They often spoke Yiddish, German, Russian, Polish, French and Hebrew. They were highly literate in those languages and well schooled in the art of business as well as mathematics. They may not have known English, but they were far from uneducated.

You'd be surprised by how many successful and middle class ones don't ignore this "blackness."
They are probably just better at playing the double consciousness

yup, one way at work, down for the struggle on FB

Some back story. Wilson's parents were Ivy League. Therefore, they hung out with whites and stressed academic excellence. Very few gangstas at Harvard. Sounds like the Obamas.
But Wilson never went to Rev Wrights Black Liberation Theology Church. If he had he'd be a community organizer instead of an NFL star QB.

Grant Hill had to put up with that same crap when he played at Duke. Even Jalen Rose made some ignorant comments about him.
True. Calvin raised his son right.

What some Blacks took exception with is when Tiger Woods told Oprah that he's "offended" when people refer to him as Black. How do you think Italian-Americans would have reacted if Joe DiMaggio said that he was offended when people referred to him as Italian? How do you think Irish-Americans, Hispanic-Americans or Jewish-Americans would react if one of their own rejected them?
1. DiMaggio actually hated rich people. He said that 'no son of a rich man could make it into the Major Leagues." That was pretty much true in his day. But then Lou Gehrig was upper middle class from birth before Joe reached the Yankees.
2. As for Irish/Hispanic/Jews... I don't see why they would care. I'm French/Hispanic/Jew. My culture is Cajun. I don't care. I'm an individual. Not a member of a group. Maybe it's just me.

No one has yet to have the nads to try to explain in layman terms WTH "blackness" is.
quote:
They often spoke Yiddish, German, Russian, Polish, French and Hebrew.
No. Depending on the group, they spoke one or maybe two of those languages.
quote:I don't why you're arguing this point. It's a semantics argument really. They did not speak English in an English-speaking country. If you don't see that as an educational impediment, I don't know what to tell you.
They were highly literate in those languages and well schooled in the art of business as well as mathematics. They may not have known English, but they were far from uneducated.

yes mainstream Dems have been good about cultivating blacks to be the face of their party, but I'm not necessarily talking about politicians who have been "placed" by the party power structure. The jesse Jackson and Al Shraptons are part of the political power structure that derives it's identity from "ghetto" blackness.

Blackness is knowing that in today's current climate, some may question you in everything you do, mainly due to the pigment of your skin.
You'd be surprised at how powerful that ostracisization can be in forming a a group.

I think most of this(CB's quote), revolves around having parents who actually care if their children are successful.
My parents have given an arm and a leg to make sure I know how to be successful and know how important it is.
When I was 10 these kids were pushing me around at the baseball field one night. They kept making fun of me and pushing me down and shite. Little did I know, my dad was sitting on some bleachers behind us just watching. Once it got out of hand he came over and got me, and gave me the whole "be careful, stick up for yourself, and know how to handle situations like this" talk.
My parents have always pushed me to do well in school and explained how important it is. Same with sports and every other aspect of life. When I'd get in trouble they'd show me why I was wrong and punish me accordingly.
All of this has molded who I am. Kids who don't get this, and in some cases receive the opposite, grow up with low self esteem and no set of guidelines to abide by. This keeps them from being successful.

wasn't Charles raised by his grandmother?

It's time for black people to get over that mindset. There's no reason to be suspicious of everyone just because of a few jerks.

Why is it that black people are so consumed with someone's blackness?
I dunno. Perhaps it's the centuries of mistreatment they received when their "blackness" was the ONLY relevant part about them that society based its actions on?

Neither Jackson nor Sharpton have ever held public office at any level.
