How often do they open up more days for the field day portion of the course? There is nothing available within 75 miles of my zip code until the end of 2014, and nothing listed for 2015 yet.

Not often, I took mine a year ago in the summer, that is when they have the most available. I would recommend Livingston Parish Sheriff's office for the field day whenever the next one comes up.

That is kind of far; I was thinking Honey Island since I'm over on the east side of Mandeville. Reasons you suggest LP Sherrifs office?

It's all the same. Go to whichever is closest to your area.

My son will have to take that in the next year or so. Do I need to be there with him? What all do they do?

No, assuming he's old enough for it to count and he's not a badass you can drop him off.

The field day is just that...field day. They do more with weapon safety and the students usually shoot skeet and/or targets with a .22. You can do the classroom portion online and then you just need to show up with that printout and do the field day and you'll get your card.

They do them all year long - don't wait until hunting season to look for one...

Thanks. I took it in 1988 before they had a Field Day.

Hunter Education

quote:

There will be a Traditional Hunters Ed
Class on Nov 1st(Book work)and
Nov 2nd (Field day with final test)
at the American Legion Hall on Ronald Reagan Hwy in Covington.

The roster is full with 70 students signed up and 15 on the waiting list

My suggestion, since all you need is the final retest and the field day portion, would be to show up Sunday morning at 7:30 with your online certificate and ask if they could squeeze you in for the final test and field day...the field day is their easier day...

they usually are very accommodating, but they could very well say "no"

You've got nothing to lose but a drive up there if you don't have anything planned.

Note: You don't know where you got this info...

I do appreciate that but unfortunately, I'll be in New Orleans that weekend with the wife. How often does American Legion Hall have the classes? I don't recall seeing them in the link on the OP

Im certified to teach the hunters, bow hunters, and muzzleloader safety courses, maybe I should look in to it if there's enough of you goons that need/want it.

from my understanding of the LDWF program, you aren't allowed to teach a private class, except to boy scouts etc.

you will have to make a public notice and offer to teach the Public...

I've heard of some being able to side step the rules... but get caught and you can lose your ability to teach going forward...be cautious...

meh..if I lose it I lose it...lol

I only have it from when I was a game warden and we had to get certified to teach it even though GWs dont teach it.

IIRC in order to get the proper paperwork for the class as well as the teaching manuals, tests and such...you have to let them know the full disclosure of the class...I can't recall if they will advertise the class publicly for you once you give them the date or what...I can find out more if you'd like...

I just remember our instructor course... I think I hinted at being able to teach some friends privately and they said only if you had a large hunting club, but would still have to have some openings for the public...It's been two years now, so I could be remembering wrong.

They were pretty emphatic that "private" courses are not allowed. I was in the same class as you and that's how I remember it.

Quit sugarcoating it.

And TTT, as Pepp mentioned, show up the morning of the field day with your online test and they should be able to accommodate you. (once again, you didn't hear this from Pepp or I.)

... food does remain an anchor point in all my memories...I may not be able to tell you what Disney parks we went to on our last vacation...but I can sure tell you which restaurants we went to, if the food was up to par and give you recommendations...

Showing up the morning of the class may be difficult since my buddy, wife and I all took the online class together and are all looking to schedule the field day together. If it was just me, I'd do it. I don't want to show up thinking they will accommodate 3 people though
