As for Gillian, I just re-read her Wikia bio. SO much I have forgotten. I need to rewatch this show. Gillian was no angel, frankly, living under the boardwalk where Nucky found her she was destined to a life of crime and prostitution. She, like so many other characters, schemed and connived to get what she wanted. She hated the Commodore, but then used him and presented a front of one big, happy family when it suited her needs (getting Jimmy to rise to the top of AC), then had Jimmy kill him (his own father) when it suited her needs. Never mind that the altercation that caused Jimmy to kill the Commodore was started when Jimmy was choking the life out of Gillian and the Commodore tried to save her.

For everyone hating on Nucky the one thing I will say about him is that he actually felt remorse for what he had done to Gillian and Jimmy and tried to make amends. He took Jimmy in and treated him like his own son, prepared for him to take over AC, paid for him to go to Princeton (which Gillian screwed up and got him expelled because she was jealous of his girlfriend). Gillian destroyed all that and caused Jimmy to run off to WW1.

In the end Jimmy teamed up with the Commodore and company to kill Nucky. Nucky won the war for AC and Jimmy had to pay with his life. Nucky was really left with no other choice.
