Guys up here at work talking about all this "moonshine" you can buy now and how it "fricks you up quick!" All those moonshines are 80 proof and no more potent then any other garden variety liquor.

I tell them to drink a straight bourbon that could range from 90-120 proof and they say it does get you drunk as fast.

The moonshine I have in the garage cabinet is in a milk jug, made in Chelsea, Alabama and I guarantee it will "frick you up quick."

And no you aren't going to find it at your local liquor store. I agree. People who are drinking store bought moonshine, don't know what moonshine is. I get straight corn liquor, real white lightning. And let me tell you, on a cold winters night sip one nice little glass and you will be warm and toasty as well as bulletproof and a rocket scientist.

Same is true of tequila. It has a lore that it will F you up more than other booze, but another liquor with same alcohol % will have the same effect on your BAC.

I went to the Ole Smoky moonshine distillery in downtown Gatlinburg last year and sampled every single variety they carry and didn't even catch a buzz. I asked the guy what proof it was and found that many of them were only 40 proof. His explanation was that the fruit ones are simply 'flavors' that should be mixed with one of their more potent shines (which are still not as potent as real moonshine). So basically you gotta buy 2 bottles (at 20 bucks a pop) in order to achieve a half-arse potent proof level. Yet people were walking out with bottles and bottles of it. Popcorn Sutton is rolling over in his grave.

Are you saying that combining two, 40 proofs, makes it more potent..?

so much wrong in this thread

quote:

only 40 proof

so it was 20% alcohol? or was it 80 proof and 40% alcohol? i'm guessing the latter

I fully understand proof/alcohol content, and I can say that a bourbon drunk vs a vodka drunk for me are totally different. I can't explain it, but it's the same for white and red wine- lighter liquors give me a lighter buzz/drunk.

He was talking about fruit-flavored "moonshines" so probably only 20% alcohol. Water it down, women will still love it and the spirit goes twice as far.

Yes and no.

If it were that simple, how do people build tolerances to alcohol? It's more complicated than just alcohol is alcohol

Your body may also react to ingredients in one type of liquor different than another.

But, generally speaking, you are correct.

Yep. My wife can't do any dark liquors. She never tried whisky, other than mistakenly grabbing my glass instead of hers from time to time. But she would get an awful chest-tightening feeling when she had dark rum. Sometimes even lighter rums would do it to her. She switched off of that to Vodka. Now she just drinks Michelob Ultra or some fruity white wine.

I'm the opposite. I prefer the dark stuff, mostly bourbon and an occasional scotch. I'll drink vodka if it is all we have, but it doesn't have the same "feeling" as a bourbon buzz.

Because you are shitfaced when you drink it. Nobody starts the night with Jager..or goldschlager or rumpleminz.
