I don't know if my plate fell off or if it was stolen, but I noticed my front plate was missing last week (in Texas). Guess I need to apply for a new one so if some illegal does happen with it I can say I wasnt in possession of it at the time

Report them stolen. You can drive without the plates and go to the dmv on Monday for new ones. Happened to me a couple of years ago.

They'll postpone if you let them know your quandary.. Just another typical A&M couple, there's no cherry to be broken.

Get the officer/deputy to give you a card with the complaint/report number and keep it with you in case you are stopped. Before going to the dmv pick up a copy of the report as the DMV will require s copy to issue a replacement plate.

Drive your car as normal. If pulled over show your license plate.

You are okay, your car is still legally titled and licensed.
