Students Are Being Suspended Over Gun Shaped Pop Tarts, but THIS is Okay?

Auburn School District in Washington State is facing intense criticism for a decision that some see as both dangerous and hypocritical. District officials have agreed to allow an elementary school boy of the Sikh faith to carry a dagger to school.
quote:
The parents of the boy, who attends Auburn’s Gildo Rey Elementary, informed district officials that their child would be carrying a Kirpan, small sword or dagger, to school daily. The school did not object.
While it is argued that the Kirpan is a tradition of the Sikh faith and considered to be an instrument of social justice, one school volunteer argued that if it couldn’t pass through TSA at the airport, then it has no place at school.
The volunteer, identified only as Shelby, said, “”They can’t take that thing into the airport. TSA would be all over it. Why is a school any different?” She added that she would not be returning to the school as long as the knife was there.
Auburn Assistant Superintendent of Schools Ryan Foster said that this is not unusual and, in fact, many student and faculty who are of the Sikh faith have carried their Kirpans on campus for years. He said, “The knife can’t come out. It can’t be shown around. It needs to be underneath their clothing. That allows them to express their religion without jeopardizing anyone’s feeling of safety. If there are any problems, we will take it to the family, but we don’t expect any.”
The district maintains that exceptions to Washington’s “zero tolerance” policy for weapons are allowed under state and federal guidelines.
quote:
Meanwhile, students across the country have faced suspension or some other type of reprimand for wearing t-shirts in support of the Second Amendment, or other similar shirts, because there was a gun on the shirt. Students have also faced punishment for chewing a pop tart into the shape of a gun. There have also been instances of students being told not to bring a bible to school.
The argument is made that this is a religious freedom issue, but others believe that it takes away from school safety. Washington State is currently one of the states that are suing Christians to force them to violate their religious beliefs. Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who is a Democrat, is suing an elderly Christian florist because she would not make a floral arrangement for a homosexual wedding stating that it violated her religious beliefs and religious conscience.

is this the title of a book?

Love their justification for being pussies, "well it's under their shirts you can't see it gosh!"

Different parts of the country have different levels of tolerance on certain issues. Imagine that.

Sikh's are pretty cool people. At least the ones I've met. I just realized I have nothing further to add.

I got suspended in jr. high over 20 years ago for carrying a pocket knife in my pants that had less than a 3" blade - was the first day back and I had it on my all summer long while playing in the woods. I don't see how this is any different.

I'm surprised that the folks at the Tea Party News Network aren't hailing this as a victory for religious freedom. (Well, not really, but you know what I mean.) Sikhs are required to carry a kirpan at all times as an essential part of their faith.

If...
Then how does this make sense?

Ya in NYC they are also allowed to carry them but they have to be glued into the sheath so it is impossible to remove. If they do that then fine.

Sikhism says that the kirpan doesn't have to be visible, just on your person.

I'd be cool with it if it wasn't for the fact that when I was in 7th grade, a kid got stabbed because he was bullied at school.

This. Hell I always kept a deer skinning knife in my back pocket in High School at IA and they didn't give a shite.
IA and PA have raffles every year to raise money by giving away shotguns and assault rifles. Libs in Cali would shite a brick if a school did that

Exactly. We had people come to school with bows and guns in their trucks after hunting that morning. Yeah the principal would ask them not to do that because it's better to not have it on campus at all but they wouldn't shite a brick.

That was back in the day when common sense prevailed - but Gen X shite their pants when Columbine happened and are all anti-everything that the WW2 generation went through.

This is what happens when people start crying about being exempt from laws for their own stupid religious beliefs. They don't enjoy it when others are exempt for their different stupid religious beliefs.
