Heres one for you:

In Laffy, an extra $8 per month is tacked on to your utility bill for "recycling". Seems the private firm handling this does not make enough profit re-selling the recyclables, so walla, the $8 per month.

I would love to own a private business that if not profitable, could charge the residents of Laffy $8 a month!

Yes

The service is offered (and I am charged for it) whether I do it or not, so I may as well do my part.

I believe the $8 is intended to cover the city's administrative cost associated with the program.

Nope, the city will tell you that the private firm is not profitable and in order for the city to contract them and provide this valuable service, each home is charged an $8 "assessment" on their utility bill.

Both Laffy and EBR have administrative cost built into the programs. The $8 is to cover that cost, therefore ensuring the city doesn't loose money on the deal. Definitely politics at play to get the contracts enacted in the first place

Yes, yes, why wouldn't you recycle? Or do you want to leave our trash for our children to deal with?

Bottom line is that city govt charges and collects an assessment from its citizens so that the private firm is guaranteed a profit. What's wrong with that picture?

Yes, it is offered here in GA.

Yes, I recycle.

It's easy.

I estimate around 75% of my garbage is recycled. My recycling bin is always significantly more full than my landfill bin.

I'm not denying that is what is happening or that it's kosher. Like I said, definitely politics at play.

The person who I bought my house from took the recycle bin, called and they told me a new one is $500 so I do not recycle

It is funny about recycling.
I use to own a solid waste disposal company and we offered recycling.
We had our own facility which handled recycling for our commercial service customers.
Our competitors did not have a facility and the nearest one was 80 miles away.
They just dumped the so called recycled cardboard, cans, and paper in the white goods landfill. Reason it was cheaper than the diesel it cost plus labor to run truck 80 miles to the center and 80 miles back to their haul station.

So much for recycling sometimes it makes people feel good that is about it. Does not save that much room in the landfill. Cost more in fuel along with having more trucks on the road to haul it. Recyclables are touched x amount of times before it goes to it final place to be recycled. Cost of doing it is more expensive that what it saves in resources.

If it makes people feel warm and fuzzy I guess that is ok.

I've wondered that too- what does the video say (can't watch it now)- that the energy required to recycle is more than making new things?

We recycle most things. The city I live in just gave everyone new cans for both types of trash.

I used to recycle when I lived in BR because they gave me one of those big trash can like ones. Moved to Metairie, and I have a little plastic bin now. I haven't put it out once because I don't feel like carrying the fricking thing to the street.

Most of my garbage is recycling, and in BR, it would fill up much faster than the trash can. Now, it all goes in the trash
