Another factor is the late freezes we had this spring. It affected some varieties more than others. If your trees had blooms on it during a freeze, it likely burned them.

I've got two pecan trees in my backyard. They produce a ton of pecans but they are usually empty or have a very small nut inside the shell. No edible pecans are ever produced.
Now, I've got a ton of squirrels that consistently throw green pecans down early. Is that the issue or do you guys think it's the tree itself? Anything that I can do to fix this?
A pecan tree that sheds limbs and doesn't produce fruit is not worth having IMO.

I only have one pecan tree and there aren't any others around. I was told I need two or more to get the fruit from them. Is that true?

If you live in the broadmoor area, all of those trees in that part of town are the same age. They produce every other year. This year you will just see a shite load of "self pruned" limbs. I grew up in Shreve island and we got huge crops every other year. Now im in town south and have spent my morning picking up limbs from a tree that will cost $2k to cut down :sigh:

my two dogs love to sit in the backyard and munch on pecans all day
mine do the same. when I can't find them, I head to the 3 tress in my front yard. My dogs will be grazing like bovines.

Mine hoard them in their kennels like squirrels.

For some reason, pecan trees are cyclical. They may produce great one year or several years, and then not good or basically nothing the next few years

Grandmother's always produced every other year.

The normal cycle for pecan trees is that they will produce good one year, great the next, and then almost nothing the next.
Note I said normal, it's not set in stone.

Younger pecan trees (<15 yr old) can produce yearly, as they get older they tend to produce more one year than the next.

Over here it was the combination of pecan scab and pecan phylloxera. But it is somewhat true that pecan can skip production years, especially after a good year.

My pop's orchard doesn't produce anything unless we fertilize, probably something to do with the soil since it's clay.

We have a ton this year, some years none though....
Anyone know where I can get over a buck a pound around the BR area?
