I thought the movie was pretty good. It creates constant tension without ever utilizing the typical tools of a horror movie. That was impressive to me.

I saw it a couple weeks ago

I thought it was solid. I think it's getting hyped way too much and a lot of people will be disappointed.

But I like the tension and thought it had heart

I didn't know this had come out...was it in theaters? Is it on DVD?

This is one I'd like to see, but am not going in with lofty expectations or anything like that.

I watched it on my computer

Most people will enjoy it. SFP hates film and tv

Yeah, I love SFP, but take his M/TV advice very rarely.

watched a couple nights ago. liked it till about halfway thru.

I figured she was going crazy, but her kid was seeing shite too.

If she was crazy who is eating the worms?

If you do have a monster/ghost/thing in your basement you should move, not feed it worms

She is crazy, but her craziness / grief / depression is also really objectified in the monster.

It's a movie; it can include real magic. You don't always need to explain the supernatural away as a hallucination or whatever. In fact, I think movies are almost always less interesting when you find out that "it was all a dream" and so forth.

This movie was ok. The reviewers with the "scariest movie I haz evar seenz!!!!!" Blurbs are idiots. I'll agree with SFP on that point.

if a world has no rules, then there are no stakes

if there are no stakes, then there is no reason for me to invest myself in the movie because i don't care about any character

Who says the world of the movie has "no rules"? You are confusing the movie's supernaturalism with it having no rules.

The movie follows the logic of allegory, one of the oldest genres of storytelling.

Very good movie, but not very scary.
Personally, I'm easily scared while watching a 'scary' movie and didn't jump once. The underlying plot, and acting is what makes this movie good.

I had my expectations too high I think. I really was expecting it to be very scary. It was a good movie, though.

I didn't jump once either. But I'd say that this movie was more genuinely eerie than anything I've seen in a while.

the book also had to exist, b/c she burned it (went to the police station with the ashes on her hands)

I haven't heard many people bring this up so I may be wrong, but I took this as proof that the book was real and that she was the one making the book. They made a point at the birthday party to say she was an author and had written children's books among other things and the discoloring was only on her right hand. I took the coloring not to be ash, but to be from the type of heavy art pencil used to make the book.

Just watched this tonight and loved it.

It's a movie that will stay with you for a while and will not get better with each viewing. The acting by the mother was superb. She was genuinely horrifying at times.

I give it three dancing nanners out of three dancing nanners

THEN WHY DO YOU HATE EVERYTHING?

if a film/story/tv show lacks total verisimilitude, it seems like you shite all over it.
