Y'all's reviews certainly don't make it sound like The Shining or The Exorcist good..

I don't think it is personally. But I thought it was really good.

ETA: It's more Shining than Exorcist, as far as a subject matter comparison.

Wow. I didn't think it was that bad.

Spoilers...........

I like how it was left up to interpretation whether or not the monster was real. I took it as The Babadook is actually her insane side that at the end we find out will always be there but she keeps it at bay. I thought it was a cool idea.

major continuity error, with that theory

SPOILERS

if the chick goes insane, it's not really explained and that's really weak in terms of storytelling. i thought they were going to make it one of those split consciousness movies where we find out she's been a POS and that's why the kid is fricked up, but that clearly is not it b/c there is a clear pre/post babadook storyline (the kid makes references to the shift and babadook didn't exist at the beginning of the movie). if it's a monster, it's weak sauce without any explanation.

also, most importantly, it simply wasn't scary

Matrix Revolutions

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

Will check this out. Thanks for the heads-up.

Spoilers........

I'm not saying it was the movie of the year or anything and I agree that it wasn't very scary as far as it's jump out and scare you moments. I felt like the kid was fueling her mental breakdown with his obsession with the Babadook. To each his own I guess. Sometimes I like it when everything is not explained, ie true detective.

oh the reviewers did. we need to pull the credentials of those people

well in this case it wouldn't be "everything isn't explained" and more " the images on film intentionally are lies" for that theory

I thought it was pretty good! Some great art direction and good performances by Essie Davis and Noah Wieseman.

I agree that it wasn't very scary in a horror movie sense, but scary in a psychological thriller type way.

I disliked the last 30 minutes and even groaned at a couple parts. I really disliked one specific sound effect they used for the Babadook because it was an effect that I've heard used for dinosaurs and other movie beasts. Besides that, the overall sound design was pretty good!

This is one of the things that makes me believe it was in their minds.

i think it's more a sign of a low production budget

Maybe I saw this completely wrong, but I feel like there is evidence to support my theory.

I believe her son and lack of sleep drove her insane. The more nights she stayed up, the worse it got. Also the whacked out shows she was watching on TV. Dead husband, son's obsession with monsters, lack of sex . She was unable to live a normal life, and subconsciously she blamed her son. She blamed him for her husband dying because she was pregnant and on the way to the hospital when it happened. She said as much at the end. She said she wished her son would've died instead of her husband. All of these things contributed to her fall into ultimately trying to kill him. That was my take.

i'm not really dismissing your point. it's more of a criticism of the film for failing to really tell the story with that possibility

SPOILERS

all the stimuli the kid observes = can't be in her head. the whole "babadook" being seen by the kid before she goes crazy, picking out the book, etc

the book also had to exist, b/c she burned it (went to the police station with the ashes on her hands)

basically for the side to be "she's just crazy" we basically have to presume she made the book (and after tearing it up in sane mode, added more pages while crazy and taped it back together, etc). we also have to presume that she was never crazy previously. we also have to presume that all the times the kid mentions the babadook, it's her head warping what he's saying (and since the movie isn't first person, we can't even blame an unreliable narrator as if this were written fiction).

it goes beyond just being open-ended. if they want it to be open-ended, we have to presume a lot of extreme stuff (or presume the movie is a lie, which just makes it a huge lie and a waste) and that's just bad storytelling for a movie.

i thought about halfway through that the film was going to reveal that she is the monster the kid keeps seeing and she's the reason he's so fricked up

I took it as the book existed in the beginning but the changes were in her head. I may need to watch it again to analyze it and pick apart more of the details. There may be too many questions for it to be fully effective with the "she went crazy" theory. Either way, I thought it was well shot and looked amazing for it having such a small budget.

I may get around to watching it again in a few weeks, but I doubt it. It wasn't like it was good enough for me to get excited about watching it again.

I'm not trying to sound like a "movie badass" but I figured it was the woman going insane the whole time just by the trailer... If that's not the case then I'm wrong but it seemed really predictable.

Yea, it's not like it was a surprise or anything, IMO. I just thought the way it played out was pretty cool. There were no surprises really.

I don't think that was ashes on her hands. I'll post a quote from a poster on imdb:

quote:

The Mum wrote the book!!Me and my girlfriend hours afterwards questioned how the book came about. She use to be a kids writer as said in the scene with the other mums at the party. Then when she goes to the police station her hands are black! That's not from the burning of the book in the garden, it's from using pastels etc to make those extra pages of the book. We're certain that's right. Any thoughts? We loved this film.

That makes more sense to me

I would say that pretty much proves my theory.
