Renter's Deposit - how long after you move to receive it?

What is a reasonable amount of time to receive your renters deposit? I moved out Aug. 1 and have talked to my landlord 4 times including once face to face and still have not received it. Should I keep waiting? If not what is my best course of action?

There should be a law regarding it, in AZ its like 30 days or they have to pay triple or something like that.

He has 30 days after you move to return it or provide an itemized receipt on what the deposit was used for. You can take him to small claims and they can award you up to double of what the deposit was.

When I pay a rent deposit I go in expecting not to see it again, sometimes I get it sometimes they find a bullshite reason not to give it to you.

I've never had to wait that long. don't know the legal limit. I assume the next step should be a letter, crafted by a friend who is an attorney.
Then the LL will respond stating the deposit was withheld for damages to the property.

I've heard they're obligated to return it within 45 days... I've gotten it as soon as a week.
Generally, unless it's a deadbeat landlord, management companies will find SOMETHING to blame you for to keep at least some of your deposit.

I waited two months to get it from my old landlord. I had to literally flag him down a few times in the street he wouldn't return my calls. Still owes me money. fricking thief.

In Alabama if they haven't given you a reason for keeping it after some period of time(45 days?) they have to give you back double the original. At least that is how it used to be.

It is probably defines as 30 days in your lease. You read the lease, right?
You probably fricked the place up. You might want to prepare for a lawsuit for the damage you did to the place.

send him a certified letter requesting your deposit returned or a written explanation as to why he doesn't believe it should be returned. If he doesn't pay you back within 30 days or provide you written reasons, file in small claims court. If you disagree with reasons, file in small claims.

I just found it, its 45 days. I sent him a notice letting him know if I didn't have it by the Nov. 1 I would take it to small claims court.

No we have been contacting about once every couple of weeks. I sent it the way we have been in contact. He responded with "thanks for the threat".
