An academic fraud investigation at the University of North Carolina has found that more than 3,100 students were involved in a "shadow" curriculum" that occurred over nearly two decades.

The investigation reveals a wider scope of academic fraud than previous probes by the school and the NCAA. The investigation found that the students — nearly half of them athletes — took classes that they didn't have to show up for and required only a research paper that was often given an A or B regardless of the quality of work.

Story just breaking. Tons of shite being released...

quote:

The report, released Wednesday, says academic advisers in North Carolina's athletic department colluded with a manager in the African and Afro-American Studies department for student-athletes to take classes to boost their grade-point averages and keep them eligible in their respective sports.

The classes, in place from 1993 to 2011, were overseen by Debby Crowder, the longtime manager in the African and Afro-American Studies department, and later by the department chairman. They allowed a student to write a paper of at least 10 pages, rather than attend lectures or meeting with professors. The papers were graded by Crowder, who was not a professor. They typically earned an A or B-plus grade.

NCAA says info in new #UNC academic fraud report will be reviewed by its enforcement staff but won't comment now on substance of the report.

I know this happens at schools in one way or another, but this seems beyond what you would expect.

I don't know though, maybe other schools just got a better system.

What an embarrassment. The NCAA shares their part of the blame. They've allowed collegiate athletics to make a mockery of these institutions.

Pretty unbelievable this was going on for regular students as well. I guess they had to allow open enrollment to keep up the charade though and I'm sure shite like Pick A Prof helped regular kids find these classes

Their football program sucks anyway, but I wonder what will happen to one of the elite basketball programs in the nation.

I minored in African-American studies at LSU, and the majority of the curriculum was elementary.

Needless to say, the overwhelming majority of the students in those classes were athletes, several of whom are on NFL rosters.

But, we did have actual books and "papers" to turn in.

I can't imagine the classes at UNC. And only 47% of the students were athletes in those paper classes at the famed University of North Carolina. Wow.
