The 12 year old thread reminded me of a situation at my son's school. There's a kid in his grade who is just a waste of space. He's been arrested several times already (at 13) and is a constant disruption in the classroom. My son refers to him as "the delinquent." I had to get his schedule changed because the kid basically doesn't let anybody learn when he's in the classroom. He kept snatching pens out my son's (and other kids) hands, snatching papers and wadding them up, cursing the teacher, etc. My son says the teachers never do anything. But, the kid is allowed on the football team. I was talking to another mom about it and said how I think it's wrong to reward a kid like that with privileges like being on a team. She said, "Maybe he needs football." I don't believe anyone "needs" football. If you don't have good grades and are a general POS, I don't think you should be allowed to represent your school and play on a team. But I grew up in a house where extra curricular activities were a reward for doing what we were supposed to do. Getting good grades, doing chores, etc. Anyone agree with football as a fix for a generally worthless kid?

That's kind of my opinion. Not "Here's a jersey. Now run out all that energy, you little rascal!"

Imagine how much worse "the delinquent" would be without some type of way to release any pent up aggression or other emotion. I agree that extra curricular activities should be a reward, but in some cases it could literally be saving a child's life (either his own or someone elses)

..and this is reason #1 why parents choose to send kids to private schools.

They don't put up with that shite.

This is where a good coach can save a kid's life. Tell the kid, I'm going to check with your teachers every week to see how you're behaving in class. If you stay out of trouble, you play. If not, you run every day while the rest of the team practices.

I'm aware. But despite the sampling that is OT, private school is not an option for all. And his school is generally good. I had a very civilized discussion with the principal and his schedule was changed that day. My son brought a low D at interim time to a high B in the new class.

I generally agree that extra curriculars should be a priviledge, but in this situation, I'd allow it. The kid may not have a positive male role model at home, and a coach could provide that.

Meh, that just seems to be a bunch of crap ginned up by those sepia-toned Tom Rinaldi puff pieces on ESPN.

That's how I feel. Look at college and NFL players. Football hasn't helped a lot of them not be worthless pieces of shite.

Nope. I've coached youth football for 13 years, and I tell all of my kids that if they are a problem at school/home, or they don't keep their grades up, they do not play.

I'm at a catholic school, so I teach:
God
Family
School
Football

Football is a privilege for doing all of the things that you are supposed to do every day.

You're the kind of coach I'd want for my kids if they were into that sort of thing. I think setting priorities like that and giving a kid something to work for is much more effective than just letting them play because they're aggressive.

Oh I'd let this kid on my team. I'd make him run everyday and make him be a squad rn at the local high school so the defense can crush him.

Every child has a story. At 13 they are a product of their home life :-(
Maybe he does need football.

Every parish needs "alternative" schools for kids like that. I know Jefferson parish had at least two. All the dummies and bad kids went to Martyn or Deckbar.
