Moving Pets Across the Country

Any advice? Two cats, 12 hour trip. My belongings and car are being moved by my company, but I am thinking of renting a larger vehicle and making the drive to move the pets. The car rental would be free. 12 hours in a car with 2 pets sounds awful, but checking them on a plane sounds bad, and I would never subject other travelers to bringing them with me as carry-on.

I drove almost 18 hours nonstop from DC to La and back with my dog. He was fine

I moved from Houston to Philly with 2 cats and a wife. Should have made the wife fly. The cats were fine.

Are they okay being on leashes?

Done this several times, just load up the pets and drive. You should be able to get a sedative from your vet. Whatever you do, don't pay a pet moving service!

Either way is fine...I do 12 hour drives pretty frequently and it is not really an issue. If it is a problem, just break the trip into two 6 hour drives with a night in between....
on the other hand, I don't think the flight would be much over an hour or two, so checking them may scare them a bit, but would be over pretty quickly...

When I plan on doing this, I'm drugging the cat and flying her to the destination as she gets car sick.
The dog, however, is going to make the road trip across the country with me.
My opinion: drug and fly the cats.

you can take a dog and cat on the plane in a kennel if they are small enough

Most pets travel just fine for whatever lengths of time.
Some get carsick or get nervous, etc.

Moved two dogs and two cats about 12 hours from Louisiana. Leave the cats stay in the house for a day or two after the move. They will be fine.

I've heard horrible stories about pets on planes. I'm referring to loading your pets separately. I think it would be ok If you bring them on the plane with you.

Throw the cats out the window

You must drive pretty fast if you can get across the country in 12 hours.

The vet gave me some benzodiazepines to give to our cats. It was a 10 hour drive and they slept the whole way.

The best advice I could give you is to not own cats. Hey, at least you don't own pit bulls.

you're a girl, so it's ok to own cats.

We just drove 16 hours for vacation with our 2 dogs. They did fine. I had liquid Benadryl just in case and never needed it(check with vet...dose for dogs is 1 mg per lb). We just stopped every 2 hours to let them out to walk around, go to the bathroom, get water, etc. They slept pretty much the entire trip there and back.
