Plan to take in the following on Wednesday as it is confirmed:

J Gilberts - Dinner Menu

For Thursday, trying to decide between the following:

The Lounge at Bluestem

or

Beer Kitchen

or

The Peanut

or

The Farmhouse

and then one of the following three for lunch on Friday:

Oklahoma Joe's

or

Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ

or

Costenio's Market & Deli

As one that rarely visits Kansas City, I'm pleasantly surprised at the many good choice of restaurants this city has to offer.

For BBQ, I am very partial to J. Mueller's (brisket), Black's BBQ (beef ribs), Smitty's (brisket) and even Lockhart in Dallas (brisket and chicken) - am I setting myself up for "disappointment" by opting for either Oklahoma Joe's or Jack Stack while in town?

No LC's? If you decide on Oklahoma Joes I've heard go to the gas station one in Kansas.

I don't know much about KC dining, but the magazine I read to find new places in STL recently expanded their coverage to KC.

Feast Magazine

You may find some useful info there. I've found some good spots from reading the mag.

How was your trip to Portland? You got here just in time for the shatty weather, I think. No rain or clouds for 5 months before you showed up...

Hmmmm...

Oklahoma Joe's is solid. Some of the best ribs I've had. I've heard Jack Stack is very good as well.

Jack Stack is very nice. You'll need a nap.

As for a nice dinner, I pimp Michael Smith's for a reason. It's That Good

Ok. Have you considered Pierpont's?
I go to KC at least every other year, and we always stop in. Your other choices also look like good options.

As far as BBQ goes the major players include: Oklahoma Joe's, Jack Stacks, Arthur Bryant's, and Gates.
Oklahoma Joe's is my favorite of those, but get ready to wait. I waited an hour just to get into the door from the parking lot. From there, it looked to be another 30-45 minute wait. I walked up to the to-go counter and just got it to go. A quarter of the building is a gas station, with the rest set up for dining.

Jack stack would be my next choice. Happy hour is a big thing in KC. If you are staying near the Power and Light district there are tons of great places to go. Try some of their local Boulevard Beer.

Hope this helps.

Busy, for the most part with work.

Ate at Oswego Grill and Stanford's in Lake Oswego (stayed in Lake Oswego - no transportation - and best available within walking distance) then cabbed it to Pok Pok and Cibo another time in SE Portland.

The wings at Pok Pok were delicious.

My sister ate there the other night, so we're going to try somewhere different, i.e. J Gilbert’s Wood-Fired Steaks & Seafood.

Is the following for Oklahoma Joe's similar to the following at Franklin's in Austin?

American
The Lounge at Bluestem - LINK /
The Farmhouse - LINK /
The Foundry - LINK / (great beer bar in KC, better than Flying Saucer)
Beer Kitchen - LINK /
Peanut - LINK / (get the wings)

Burgers

Italian
Lidia’s - LINK / (get the pasta trio)

Yes the following is similar. People drinking in the line (myself included). I do like Kansas City. It's a clean city with a good amount to do downtown. Check out the WWI museum if you have time.

Ok Joe's is fantastic. Best ribs I've ever had. I've also heard great things about Jack Stack's.

This. Great drink menu. Even better food.

What part of town are you staying in? There are 3 Ok Joe's (now Joe's Kansas City) locations. Lines are more doable around lunch time in the burbs than the original gas station location.

Michael Smith's is an excellent high end choice. For sit down BBQ, Jack Stack is a good choice.
