Rippetoe's programming is good. But for the love of God do NOT follow his diet advice.

I started lifting for 7th grade football. My bench max was 90 lbs

Good point, a kid that has raw athletic ability can be fine tuned and honed to be a major leaguer, but a kid who is just an average kid, might make the varsity, won't ever go beyond that point no matter how hard the vicarious helicopter parent tries to shape it.

I began working out in 7th grade at school but with no free weights or power clean. Oddly, freshman year we were not allowed to.

His dieting advice is more suited for the shw powerlifter

Look up "pitchers 10" routine using bands. Help to strengthen shoulder and ROM without the stress of weights. Needs to be done in a controlled manner with supervision first few times.

For football we started weights the summer before 7th grade. So however old that is.

I think 14 is a good time to start. Don't go heavy though, keep it light to get form and technique. Don't overdue it either, plenty of time for hard weight routines when older.

DO NOT MAKE HIM RUN DISTANCE. If he wants to condition, make him do sprints
Pitchers run distance all the time. It's how they condition after pitching to assist in lactic acid movement out of the muscles. You can look at any big league team and they will have each of their pitchers running mileage, not sprints.
They are doing so not because there is any science supporting it but rather because its always been done.
There are few things more anaerobic and explosive than pitching. Running distance hampers explosiveness and strength and sets the athlete up for injury.
Ill link a good article on this:

Rippetoe is great. Practical Programming is also a great Rippetoe book.
