THey compared it to an ant pile and an interstate. Does the ant colony know that the interstate is even there and what it's purpose is? Maybe we are the ant pile?

Or maybe we're looking for a 7-11 and should be looking for an ant pile.

The universe isn't as big as people seem to think....the entire thing fits in a single human mind

Size is completely relative and has nothing to do with how significant something is.

In what way? Many people don't believe in God yet are still good, morally sound people. Why would anything else matter? Unless by "live like there is no god" means you frick people over or whatever, but that's possible with or without belief.

If a belief in a great punisher is the only thing keeping you from being a shithead, then please keep believing.

Totally agree, and I'm a Christian FWIW.

I've said it before, but I've known several Christians who are legitimately bad people and I've known atheists who are wonderful people. If someone thinks a belief system overrides having a conscience and thus they have cart blanche to do what they wish, then frick them so much.

so I can grasp the exploration of our solar system but then thinking about everything in our galaxy still unexplored gives me anxiety and then thinking about our cosmic universe is just too much to process.

The extent of our radio signals is just comical when it's shown like it is in the video. Pshhhh, we're never gonna find anybody out there unless they just so happen to be whizzing by one day.

very cool video, btw

It is statistically next to impossible that we are alone in the universe. We will probably never find out for sure. Statistically.

I would say our existence as scientists believe it came to be is a statistical impossibility

My biggest issue with this is....

The universe is constantly expanding.....isn't the universe infinity in size? I something is expanding, it's getting bigger....how is something that has no end able to become larger? Expanding would insinuate that there's an end somewhere, no?

What I've always found fascinating was that this is just the beginning. Inner space, if you will. The title given, "The Known Universe" is merely referencing the observable universe. We still don't know what lies beyond the cosmic horizon, light STILL hasn't had enough time in the billions of years to make it to us for us to see yet. True outer space. Whoa.

I am no astrophysicist, but I don't think it is commonly believed that the universe is "infinite", only that it is expanding at such a rapid rate (light speed) that it might as well be infinite.

Also, I've read many theories that physicists believe the universe will eventually stop expanding and will then start contracting. Everything will be gone when it fully contracts .

But that's in like 50 billion years or something.

So what is your statistical "non-impossibility" that can explain our existence?

It is. A lot of people just assume that I'm being pessimistic when I say that but I don't think it is. I'm unfathomably lucky to be where I am just in the terms of existence. I find looking at it that way gives me a better outlook on my life and makes me a better person in general.
