Monty said some promising things after last nights game with regards to the bench...he doesn't trust it. And we know what Monty does with players he doesn't trust.

quote:

“I liked the group that starts the game,” Pelicans Coach Monty Williams said of one of the team’s biggest positives in preseason. “They’re starting to get synergy out there.”

...While the Pelicans’ starting five played well for the bulk of preseason, Williams noted after Thursday’s game that he may tighten up the team’s rotation and use fewer players, at least early in the regular season.

“We’re still looking for a solid backup at the (small forward) spot,” he said. “We’re still looking for a (reserve) big to step up and be consistent. I may have to shorten the rotation, and that’s something I’m going to have to really consider this weekend. … Overall we had a good preseason and got a lot of stuff done. Now we’ve got to go home and get ready for opening night.”

Tight rotations sound fantastic. The less of the bench used, the better.

Only 9 minutes of Salmons (still 9 too many) and no Ajinca and Babbit until garbage time. I liked it.

can't do that all year. pretty much an 8 man rotation for 82 games?

Foul trouble and injury will take it's toll, but with our 3 big rotation there was no need for a 4th big, and if Miller/Babbit aren't any better than Salmons, I'm ok rolling with 3 guards most of the time.

Thought Salmons played a fairly smart game. I remember he had a hard foul on Orlando's center before he could get a wide open dunk. (That is the first time I think I have ever seen a Pelicans player make that play). Just thought he was out of place a bit. He kept just getting lost on defense as the game went on. I expect that to get better as the season goes on.

He did nothing on offense - which is actually a good thing. He shouldn't touch the ball unless the world depends on it.

The first foul was smart, the other fouls were just not having good defensive position.

I thought he sucked.

Have to see if Miller or Babbit can take those minutes.

Right. But fouling instead of letting the guy just get the basket is a "smart" play. That leads me to believe that Salmons is a smart player. If he can figure out Monty's defensive scheme, then he would be out of position less. I would like to see Monty give him some run, instead of pulling him now for two players who have proven they kinda suck no matter how much they know the schemes.

It's a smart play when it's your only option through no fault of your own. The first foul he rotated over onto I think Vucevic and fouling was the only good defensive option when you're 6'6 and have a 7 footer charging at you. The other fouls were he just lost track of his man and reached which is the definition of bad defense.

I think we'll see the same thing we've seen every time we've had "competition" at a position. Monty is going to rotate through all options hoping someone will eventually improve.

I've been ready to give up on Miller, but Babbitt is at least a legit 3 point threat that defenses will respect.

Yup. Next game you'll see Babbitt get those minutes. Then maybe Miller.

I think at some point we are going to see a "Garbage for Garbage" trade, where we send some scrubs and they give us back a SF scrub, in the hopes that we find better fits.

I agree with everything you said actually. Still didn't see anything that made me think Salmons is garbage and won't be a serviceable player. He looked like a guy who was lost. We know Babbitt is going to give us mediocre offense and bad defense - while Miller gives just sub par everything. Not sure whats the benefit of playing those two over Salmons this early in the season.

Which is probably why Monty went with Salmons, but unless Salmons picks it up, he'll give way to Babbit/Miller before too long. The good news is 3 guards wasn't that bad. We probably can't do that against every team, but it will hopefully work enough.

Salmons is just done. His stats and play have declined significantly over the years. He just didn't look good at all to me.

Dude is here to be a vet and possibly contract filler in a trade. That should be about it.

And I think you put it best in another thread, I think salmons is here for the lockerroom presence, not necessarily his play. He's been in the nba so long that he has to know how to co exist with teammates and deal with egos and show these young guys what it means to be professional
