Obama confident he could replace Ginsburg

“Well, we’ve got a pretty good track record,” Obama told The New Yorker. “We’ve got a couple of Supreme Court Justices confirmed who I think are doing outstanding work.” Obama suggested the high-profile nature of a Supreme Court fight meant he’d have better success with a nominee than with some appointments to less prominent positions. “My sense is that the Senate necessarily has to treat the Supreme Court nomination process differently than the circuit- or district-court nomination process — higher profile, people are paying attention,” Obama said.

“They have the sense, ‘All right, this is big,’ ” and the media cover the story intensely, “which means that some of the shenanigans that were taking place in terms of blocking appointments, stalling appointments, I think are more difficult to pull off during a Supreme Court nomination process.” Earlier this summer, a senior administration official told The Hill that the White House wasn't worried about filling a potential vacancy on the high court, saying it would be politically difficult for Republicans to hold up a vote on a qualified justice. But a Supreme Court vacancy would be a major test for Obama, particularly if Republicans win the majority in the midterm elections.

In other words, I can put any hack in to any of these other positions (which are more important since cert is granted so rarely).

LOL ... I read that to mean that Obama thinks HE personally can replace Ginsburg on the court.

I wish we could go back to the days when Congress wasn't so partisan, and a Democratic Senate rubber-stamped Antonin Scalia 98-0.

This is a fantastical re-imagining of our nation's history.

Those days ended with Bork...
Ah, the good old days of reasonableness and deference.

Who wants to bet on Holder get the nomination?

I'll take that bet because he won't.
However, would it surprise me? Not really.

Ginsburg should better have a food taster.

The most humorless woman I've ever met. It's a net zero with a liberal president, so let's just try to get a human being this time.

Holder is too old. Obama will want someone at least 10 years younger than him.

Since Obama will have to actually work with republicans to get one through, this is unlikely.
If he wants to replace Ginsburg, he is going to have to choose a moderate candidate and actually compromise on something.

List of Democratic nominations for SCOTUS that were blocked by Republicans?

i suspect obama will hold the upper hand in this future stand off. This will be especially true if he picks someone middle left with lots of experience.

Wrong. If the GOP takes the Senate Obama will still nominate a radical leftist to take Ginsburg's spot. But now it will be on TV, Cspan, and the GOP will be in charge of the proceedings. It won't be pretty for the Dems.

No you don't. You were perfectly fine with Congress passing Obamacare without one single GOP vote and Harry Reid using nuclear option.

Scalia got through like that because he was the first Italian on the Court. Scalia himself admits that.
