Should I negotiate the salary on the spot so that I leave their office with the salary/benefits that I am looking for? Or should I hold off on negotation until after I leave their office?

Are you a high commodity for this position?

My intention is to negotiate a higher salary no matter what they offer.

Well thats a bad idea. What if they give you an extremely competitive offer, above market value? You could piss them off and appear greedy.

Take the offer home and tell them you will put some thought into it. If you think you deserve more then counter. I wouldn't do it at the office.

I should have said in the OP that the partners said during the interview that their offer to me will be open to negotiation. How long do companies typically give you before they need a decision?

Be ready to provide reasons you are worth more than they are offering and aware that by countering they may decide you are not worth the hassle. Do you have any leverage? Specific certifications they want that are hard to come by?

I definitely would not go in with the attitude of thinking you will automatically negotiate higher...

Go for it -

Only they will know if they were going to pay you more than what you negotiated blindly.
