True, but that isn't saying much.
The success or failure of a new St George school district will be in the hands of the people who live there. If they want a massive performing arts center and a high school campus with state of the art facilities (and are willing to pay for it), the taxpayers will probably get it. If the taxpayers want to maintain the status quo and settle for more of the same, they will.
As far as other government leadership, zoning, land use planning, and infrastructure spending.....I see the same mistakes Baton Rouge made decades ago happening again in Livingston and Ascension right now. St George taxpayers could potentially control their own destiny, but those kinds of habits seem to hard to break just based on my observations. I would like to see better land use planning, more strict rules on building codes and signage, and more restrictions on development.....but that's unlikely to change overnight.

I don't know all the logistics and specifics of the whole thing, but I do live in the St. George area, and I do have a kindergarten-age son. I want him to have the best education possible, and that's why I am for the proposed new city. I just don't understand the whole bussing-in from other parts of the city.

It's still not a sure thing that it will come to a vote, and it definitely won't be anytime very soon.
First of all, there is currently only about a 4% cushion on their number of votes. If more than 4% get invalidated, then they'll have to collect more signatures.
Second of all, there are going to be lawsuits over all this. Buddy Caldwell may have said that, in his opinion, the annexations don't invalidate the petition, but that's not legally binding at all. With the casino being annexed, the proposed city is now losing over 20% of its proposed revenue and several square miles of area. At the very least, lawsuits over this will delay things.

Although it greatly annoys me when the people who are proud to tell anyone they never vote somehow seem to be the same people who whine the most about the people who get elected.

Well, an improvement over the current situation is inevitable. It's just a question of what level of improvement there will be, and based on everything I've seen so far, I expect it to be pretty significant.

Like most political votes, I think this one will be very difficult to obtain an accurate read of the results.
SG proponents have to guestimate a number on what it costs to develop and then operate a government. (and a school system) Opponents will argue that these numbers are not accurate. Same thing on tax revenues. How will you determine who you believe?
The best commercials, for most. (and rose colored glasses) To me, our political decisions are made so haphazardly that I wonder how we sustain anything a society at all...

I can't speak for everyone, but I could care less about race, as long as the kids live in my neighborhood. I really just don't understand why kids from other parts of the city have to go to transfer buses to come to my neighborhood school.

So if it takes about a month to certify the signatures that puts us at November 20th. If they don't have enough validated signatures then they have an additional 60 days to collect more which would be around a January 20th deadline. Do I have the timeline about right?
