this is the most accurate thing said today.
gus malzhan and dan mullen aren't predictable. when you are thinking run, they have the ability to pass or run and vice versa.
they take what the defense gives them, therefore they set the tone. if the defense puts 8 or 9 in the box, they have groomed their teams to make a defense pay for that.
sure it's good to 'establish' the run, but another way to establish the run is to throw the ball effectively. that softens them up, as we all know.

How do you get it when you don't let the QB throw it
Jennings is a "deer in the headlights" right now. I think he has been stunned by the fear of screwing up and he is too hesitant now. I noticed last night that he is holding the ball too long or waiting for receivers to get waaaaay open. He has not made many quality throws on timing routes over the middle or backshoulders. He would be better off counting to three and taking off running. I see why the coaches are not calling many pass plays...

Did not mean to down vote. I got a case of the fat fingers!! Subtract one from that total sir.

MYTH:
We couldnt run the ball against Auburn
FACT:
In the first half, LSU on 1st down ran 7 times and gained 54 yards, for a 7.7 ypc. Then CC put the ball in Brandon Harris' hands and he saw headlights.
We did have a lot of success running on Auburn on 1st down, but they shut it down on 2nd and 3rd down even when the ball wasn't in Harris' hands. It was kind of strange that we had so much success on 1st down and so little success on the other downs. We had a couple of 3rd and 2 plays with Magee and Williams that got stuffed. For the game I think we only averaged 3.8 ypc for the game. They didn't totally shut us down, but we didn't have much success moving the chains either.

they have groomed their teams

Running the ball is obviously very important, but it is still possible to keep a power run game identity and add some spread concepts...a complete offense.
I sure wish we could do this. our passing game is the Achilles heel in this years team. we very much need to pass successfully so we can run successfully. some spread is great but my only point is some posters on here judge an offense only by the "yards gained" and that is bull shite.

Oh really? Didn't LSU run 17 of the first 20 plays against Auburn?

thanks Einstein.
nowhere in the post is there anything about mullen vs miles
i say that mullen and malzahn have groomed their offenses to where one bludgeons you and the other can slash you but will take what you give them. their creativity and recruiting have put them in the spot they are in. their rankings show it.

FYI, Power I :
Not a Power I :
Just so everyone is clear on this. LSU does not run a Power I.

We just don't have a functional QB and I think despite Les' post game comments recognizes this
We run the power I with 2 TEs and overly simplistic pass plays because that is all our QBs can be reasonably expected to execute. And they barely do even that
We saw good balanced offense last year when we had a good qb
Our scheme is fine when we have a good qb. No scheme is good when we have bad qbs
Miles and his QB problems are entirely of his own making. When we get shell shocked against OM and Bama because of dysfunctional QB play, we'll be up here playing a chorus of these Terran musical devises.

play selection is too predictable...
it is not the scheme

Fyi there is a happy medium between all out spread and 2TE I formation.
The key is not being some damn predictable.

LSU just needs a QB that can complete at least 75% of his passes not barely 50%.

He is correct. The only problem I have personally is the style of players which are recruited are not designed to run this system. Recruiting all HS spread offense players and then running primarily Power I is what frustrates many.
What the hell?
Fournette, spread?
Williams, spread?
Hilliard, spread?
Hill, spread?
Landry, spread?
Mett, spread?
Dupre, spread?
Diarse, spread?
Quinn, spread?
Rettig, spread?
Jennings, spread?
The possible 'spread' recruit might be Harris and he's more dual threat than spread.

That sounds just as dumb now as when Ditka said it (albeit 65%) with the Saints.
(note, hopefully you were being sarcastic. When Ditka said it about Billy Joe Tolliver and Billy Joe Hobert, there were only 2 QB's in the league to be over 65% completion rate)

I fail to see the relation, except the one you are trying to make out of a quote from Sumlin who is coaching a shitty A&M team this year.

it should be that simple but, you cant fix stupid...it should be balanced, we are not balanced at all, and were not balanced because we have a one QB that throws like edward scissorhands and another that is fresh out of high school with a rocket for an arm...at least the future looks bright though...I just question miles decision making capabilities for next year....Brandon Harris should start from the beginning and he will need lots of reps over the next 4 games...

Qb still stares down the receiver. Both qb's need to be taught to go through progressing. It will come along with time, but needs to be taught now.

sadly, i think this is coming, maybe not as bad as Moo St and Auburn because of everyone else getting a bit better, but it will be the same script, their D loads the box we cant run, get down big early and forced to throw (our glaring weakness) all game....which is fine if you have Mett, but not this cat Jennings...If we get down big early, better bring harris in quickly...

quote:no doubt. however, looking at the cfb landscape over the last 10 years, I don't see this strategy winning the most amount of games against the highest ranked teams primarily because there are 3 phases to the game. the best coaches, like miles, mitigate risk on offense based on how the defense and special teams stack up.
their rankings show it.
I just look around the rant and see a million posts on the offense play calling and the qb which is the usual oversimplification from a certain type of fan. they aren't accounting for all the variables like miles is.
