No offense, but you lived near a levee and you didn't think it was a good idea to maybe get flood insurance?

This is different than the FEMA money they gave out right after Katrina, correct?

Yes. That money was a drop in the bucket. Pocket change compared to the road home and the house lifting grants.

That's a different issue... A tricky one as well. I put you in another category. I was referring to the ones that knew they needed insurance and chose not to get any. I have mixed feelings on people like you.

I bet flood insurance would have been cheap as hell

But why buy it when the taxpayers will bail you out

Mississippi River levee has never been broken (naturally) and this house had never had a drop of flood waters in it since it was built in the 30s...

the reason my house was flooded was because of the Industrial Canal levee...which was broken because the Army Corps of Engineers were lazy and did not dig the pylons deep enough when constructing it in the 60s...

Yeah, terrific.

All my properties are in C. I'm more than 2 miles form the lake. Flood insurance is not required, but I still buy it. It's cheap and "things that never happen" happen.

yeah you know some people aren't as smart as you I guess...hell if everybody was as smart as you nobody would be living in New Orleans...shite why even talk about people living in New Orleans...maybe the people in the midwest need to buy volcano insurance...

ETA: Forgot to mention that my house was also 3 feet off the ground before the storm...still got 9 foot in it.

Same for the house I lived in. It was my grandparents house and after their death the family kept it. The house had never flooded and had never had a mortage or flood insurance. Yeah, I guess we should have had flood insurance, but hindsight is always 20/20.

And we didn't qualify for Road Home. The family repaired it with their own funds.

Did you and your Dad pocket the money and buy shite totally unrelated to your damage? If so that is called fraud.

Understood.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sorry all that happend. And im sure you'd have preferred not to go through it.

It's pretty frustrating to people who pay taxes and buy insurance to continually read about the abuses, though.

that shite happens everywhere and I understand the frustration...but if there is a system in place, you can always bet there is somebody out there who will abuse the system.

Even if in no flood zone how can you live in South Louisiana without it? No flood zone flood insurance is relatively cheap.
