And Brooklyn Brewery tells him to STFU

Chang Hates Fancy Beer

quote:

Beer snobs are the worst of the bunch. You know the old joke about cheap beer being like having sex in a canoe? I will take a beer that's "fricking near water" every night of the week over combing out my neck beard while arguing about hop varieties.

quote:

See, when a waiter asks me what I want to drink, I respond, "What is your lightest, crappiest beer?" I'm very direct about my preference. But sometimes they think I'm being a jokey frat guy and don't take me seriously. Or the sommelier worries that I'm turning up my nose at his wine list. The worst is when some dude starts to suggest a handcrafted lambic and I have to clarify my position.

quote:

I'm not saying that those beers don't taste good. They do! And there's a time and place for imperial stouts and barrel-aged saisons. (I have seen the sunrise from the bar at Mikkeller, okay, guys?) But 95 percent of the time, I don't want something that tastes delicious. I want a Bud Light. I am not being falsely contrarian or ironic in a hipsterish way. This is something that I genuinely feel: I do not want a tasty beer.

Garret Oliver from Brooklyn Brewery's response

quote:

C'mon man, give it a rest. You want us off your lawn?

quote:

It's not the fancy beer you don't like. You don't like us, your people. You have a "tenuous relationship with the Epicurean snob set?" You are the epicurean snob set! I've seen you with champagne in one hand and a Noma lamb leg in the other, chatting up celebrities. Why you frontin'? You spent your first three paragraphs insulting people just like you…is the cash, fame and luxury not working out?

quote:

We don't come telling you how we love pink slime more than your Berkshire pork, or Cup O' Soup more than your ramen, or a foil packet of carcinogens more than your tonkotsu. Why? Because that would be boring, that's why. Come over to the brewery some time. We'll have fun. I'll show you how to do this, son.

Although arrogant, Chang is the man. Watch Mind of a chef on Netflix. It's awesome.

Although I really like David Chang, I doubt he would agree with anyone's same reasoning if it were concerning food

which is pretty much what Garrett Olive says

I like Chang, but Garret Oliver > David Chang in this argument.

Exactly

I was really impressed with Garret Oliver's argument. He was spot on! I bet he even struck a nerve with Chang.

I agree with him (maybe not bud light), but I don't think its a right or wrong thing... just what I want..

This is pretty much the beer/food version of the guy who says "I'm not racist but.." and then says something incredibly racist.

If you like Light Lagers or Adjunct Lagers, more power to you, but when you come at from the 'I want the cheapest shittiest beer available' angle, IMO you're just being an a-hole or a troll or more likely both.

Why?

I'm confused.

His argument would be stronger if he was saying he personally thought Bud Light tasted delicious.

He's admitting he doesn't like it. ... but he.. wants it?
That is the most confusing thing I've ever heard.

That's like me saying I hate raw celery and it tastes gross, so it's what I order.

I think he is saying light lagers taste like nothing and in his opinion that makes them easier to drink and easier to pair with food than other full flavored styles of beer.

I wonder if he'd make the same argument for wine, then.

I just enjoy that an idol has taken a giant shite on his people.

This entire culture has really gone a bit nuts, but I understand why. Overexposure all around.

I freaking love snobs of any kind. Never understood why it bothers so many people.

Except those I can't stand people who complain about snobs. It's tired.

I hope so too, he just did a terrible job of explaining it, but that is what I got too. I actually feel that way sometimes and sometimes not.

If that's what he meant, I can deal with that. Sometimes I'm flat out not in the mood for a beer so I do gin.

Than why not just ask for a lager? Why request the cheapest beer in the house? His stance the epidemy of hipster irony.
