May have been the worst managed baseball game I've ever seen considering what was as stake.

- Subbing out Holliday and Adams
- Bringing in Wacha for a relief appearance in the 9th (hadn't pitched in like 3 weeks I believe?)
- Not going with Rosenthal in that scenario (said postgame that he "couldn't" bring in his closer in a tie game in the 9th on the road)

Matheny definitely made some bad calls in all three games at San Francisco.

That said, this series is still going on if St. Louis didn't melt down on defense.

Do you have a link to that?

It was obviously a very questionable call, and I found the ESPN article that insinuates he was thinking that exact scenario you just said he said, but I don't see him quoted as saying that.

Cards biggest problem as far as the bullpen goes is having shaky people to go to. Matheny made some questionable calls for sure but there weren't exactly easy answers for some of the situations presented

Almost as bad of a performance as Matt Williams had for the Nationals.

To put it in perspective he still owned Don Mattingly so it could be worse.

As much as I think Matheny has no business being an MLB manager, in terms of baseball strategy he's right on this.

Use your closer in a tie game in the 9th, what happens if in the 10th STL scores two runs? Who then?

But why not Maness in the 9th?

Why is he right? I mean I don't think Rosenthal is that great so I don't think it's a big deal he didn't bring him in, but say he was a good closer- why would he be right to save him?

Well, first and foremost, you're in the 10th inning, so there's that.

Ditch the names of set up guys and closers...your best option should come up in the most important situation. Can't think of many more important situations than 9th inning down 3 games to 1 in the playoffs, and the guy who hadn't pitched in 3 weeks was the best option?

What happened to all the Cardinals young arms from the 2013 Postseason?

Miller is in the rotation and threw game 4. Wacha came in and gave up the game winner. Rosenthal has been kind of iffy this postseason, Martinez was available and didn't throw. Joe Kelly is gone, not sure if there's others I'm missing.

Matheny managed all the games like a high school coach at best. Made zero sense. That said, if Yadi doesn't get hurt, the Cards take both 1 and 2 and are still playing. Cruz looked like an infant behind the plate catching Rosenthal and it cost us the game.
