I can find them both for around 480. It's the compactness and FOV that are intriguing. Going on an A Bolt 7-08.

Does the 'compactness' give you more benefit than the extra magnification? Do you hunt in the truck of a car?
Honest question...
I would much rather have that extra power to see exactly what i'm shooting at than a couple ounces difference.

It's the larger FOV that's intriguing. I feel like a broken record in here.

Care to expand on that?

I was really wanting to hear from someone who uses the smaller size scope and how the magnification worked out on longer shots.
Interesting question, beHop. I'll date myself here, but when I first started hunting (I lived in the Pacific Northwest at the time), a serious big game hunter had a scope on his rifle, usually a 4X. A really, really serious hunter might have a 3-9X. I started off w/ a 3-9X on my 270, but later changed to a 2-7X compact. I killed lots of deer at all kinds of hunting ranges and never felt like the scope was underpowered. When I changed exclusively to handgun hunting, I used a 4X. Over the years, handgun scopes have evolved so the most powerful one is a 3-12X. Honestly, I don't really need that extra power for type of deer hunting I do, but it's sure nice to have it. The main thig about extra magnifcication is that it's addicting. I"ve succesffully hit deer as far as 350 yds w/ a 7X scope. You can too if you want. The question is: what is more important to you...compactness/lightness or magnification?

That's the kind of response I was looking for (somebody with some real experience with one).

I'm really leaning toward compactness after doing some other research and reading some other forums. Thanks for the info

I have one on my .30-30
Next scope I buy for my .270 will be a 2-7
It's extremely handy. The 2x zoom is low enough to use in pretty much any situation inside of 50 yards. The field of view is awesome and the physical size of the scope is very nice. I've never even shot a deer with the scope off of 2x zoom.
7x is plenty enough for shooting deer inside of 200 yards. Haven't aimed at many beyond that with that rifle.

larger FOV is because of the lower power. the distances you said that you might be shooting would make me consider larger and more power not the opposite. if I were buying a new scope for my deer rifle, that I use on large plots or fields a 2x7 33mm would not even be in the discussion. neither would be a 3x9 40mm. get a 2.5x10 50mm and never look back.

3-9x50 if you can if not 3-9x40. get the 50 in the Nikon Buckmaster it is cheap and almost as good as my 500 Leupold

Meh
Get good binoculars if you need to be able to count points or guess spread at long range.
The military guys shoot silhouettes at 600 with iron sights. If you can drop one in the pump house of a deer at 300 yards, 7x or 10x won't matter.

Congrats, beHop!! I bet you'll have many a good hunt w/ the scope. BTW, looks like a dead telephone pole to me.
