What would happen if you're driving down the interstate

in a vehicle with an automatic transmission, and at full speed something hits the gear stick and flips it past neutral and into reverse. Transmission destroyed?

I think it will get ebola.

Stick my head between my legs and kiss my arse goodbye

Always wondered that as well, just assumed the worst.

Obviously.

Pretty sure it won't go into reverse unless you squeeze the trigger or pull the column shifter towards you
Sort of a fail safe

Mythbusters did this, and nothing major happened.

I don't think it will allow you to kick it in reverse if you are going a certain speed.

Watched a buddy do it in high school about 20 years ago on an old beat up ford f100. Tore the transmission and some other stuff to complete shite. Obviously no fail safes in that old truck. Was fun to watch though

Sid in Lakeshore did this, and nothing major happened immediately, other than my rear wheel locking up like I was standing on the breaks.
Tranny worked fine for a while, then reverse went out. When I brought it in, the guys asked "What the hell did you do to this tranny". Apparently several gears/belts were stretched/broken. I told them what happened and we all laughed and marveled it lasted 6 months after my frick-up.

It engages the Flux Capacitor. You go back in time and meet your hot teenage mom and nerd dad.

It depends. If it's a Toyota or Honda you will be fine. If Chevy, Ford, or Dodge, transmission gone.

I think it has to do with triggering the brake pedal position sensor to allow the shifter to move past neutral.

Nothing happens. Basically goes into a sort of neutral state.

I was returning to BR from the Kingfish in Lafayette at about 0700hrs going about 80mph in my mid eighties Cutlass Supreme. It slipped right on into reverse with no problems.
I was reaching for the radio and swore my buddy in the passengers seat tried to hit me, so I flinched throwing it in reverse. My buddy hadn't moved.
Maybe I shouldn't have been driving.

I know that in an F-15 if you are going full blow and you bring the throttles back to idle you can make flames shoot out in front of the nose and the engines quit, mechanics hate that

In a 1976 Mercury Grand Marquis (my pimp ride in high school) it will lock up the rear wheels and you will be getting a transmission repair a few thousand miles later.
I think most of the newer EFI cars have lockout solenoids to keep the trans from getting into reverse.

I second this.
