Bill Simmons is probably the one guy ESPN has that will do just fine without ESPN.

He is talented enough to break off, but he probably should have done it sooner. I feel like his shtick is getting old for some. He needs to make sure he finds a really good situation if he does leave. Lots of talent has disappeared when trying their luck away from ESPN.

I don't know, I mean he's ahieved virtually unprecedented success as:
a sports internet columnist
a print writer
an executive producer of widely acclaimed sports docs
a "thinking fan's" sports website
I'm not sure if Grantland makes or loses money (probably the latter), but if he made a similar site on his own without all the overhead I'm sure he'd find a way to make it profitable.
His business intelligence and pulse of what sports fans want is greatly underrated IMO. I think it's because he's such a "normal guy" that it's disarming and we don't view him as a mogul.

I'd be willing to put up with a lot of corporate BS for $5M a year to run a mediocre website, write a column every so often, and record podcasts.

Compare Simmons' contributions to the worthless sacks of shite that are Peter King and Rick Reilly, both of whom make more $$$ than Sportsguy and who suck incredibly hard.

There was a deadspin article about this yesterday. Article ends with a quote from Simmons last time where he said that "he didn't think espn was built for people like him but he loved skipper(espn vp)". Well apparently skipper is getting a little fed up with Simmons and is the one who came down hard on him this time so things could play out differently.

he needds to ask himself how much money he has and how much he needs. if he has enough, he should walk. he won't starve to death, but staying at ESPN for 5 more years creates an entirely different level of wealth for his family

He should join up with Clay Travis at Outkick. It may become TD's most hated duo of sports writers ever. The only thing holding it back is it is affiliated with Fox and not Bleacher Report.

Man I hope he leaves and leaves with both middle fingers in the air. This dude, I believe, could really affect their bottom line if he is able to get his Grantland crew out of there also. frick ESPN.

I think it would suck for his fans because I doubt he'd be as visible. I bet he'd sign some executive producer deal and we'd not get to hear from him with the exception of some standalone articles on his blog or a podcast every week with Sal and House.
As a fan I'd prefer him to stay at ESPN.

I think Simmons is far better as an aggregator of talent than as a talent himself. Grantland and 30 for 30 are his babies, and they are the two best things ESPN has done in the past decade. He has an incredible eye for that kind of big picture stuff. But is columns have gotten increasingly formulaic and his podcasts aren't all that interesting. I think he's bored with writing the same old shite over and over again.
If he leaves ESPN, it means more writing and less things like Grantland, as no one else will give him the keys to the kingdom like that. I think its better for him to stay at ESPN, but move into a management role, and just bang out a column once a month or whenever he feels like it. Only ESPN gives him the platform to do the things he truly excels at.

Do what all the greats do. Play the independent truth telling occasional maverick while cashing huge corporate checks.
I'm sure he loves the ESPN money and he definitely needs the access that they provide (and would almost certainly go out of their way to deny him, should he leave) so this is pretty much a no brainer.
I enjoy his columns and have a ton of respect for his ability to position himself but I seriously doubt that "running" Grantland and reporting to Bristol is the salt mine he's making it out to be.
