Obviously it varies greatly school to school, but overall where do sports rank?
A lot of us (me included) place a huge importance on sports, but how important is it really to a high school experience and overall success of the school?

At the end of the day is it any more vital than a debate team or mock trial?

Important to who? The students or the actual school?

Financially, very.

As you frame it (socially), not very.

Depends on what your kids want. If they paly sports I would think its very important...if not send them to BRMHS

Nevermind you said to a school.

Learned a lot of life lessons playing sports. Most adults I know that have a hard time losing and act like complete babies never played a team sport.

In high school, yes. In college, debates etc. is more important

Depends on the school. If we're talking LSMSA, not so much.

West Monroe or Evangel Christian, however...

You got some schools that are there strictly for sports...Evangel in Shreveport comes to mind.

I think it depends more about what town they're in. Big sports school in a small town is more vital then say a big sports school in a big town

I agree with that, but for arguments sake can't you learn that from other things? And is it really a high schools job to teach you that?

It's important for them to exist due to the social opportunities they provide, even if your kid doesn't participate. If I had a teenager, I'd be apprehensive about sending them to BRMH over a private on account of the lack of a football program. That means no Friday night football games, no tailgating, no marching band, no cheerleaders, no homecoming dances, and no football pep rallies, all things that seem to be pretty important to the overall high school experience in my opinion.

Like most things, it means nothing in the end.

there's a time to let it go though, I played football with a guy that's been the president of of pretty big corporation for years, he signs off e-mails with his football #, or will call and say "hey this is 81," and playing around of golf is rehashing every play from every game

You realize non football schools have cheerleaders, bands, pep rallies, and homecomings right?

It's not a high schools job to teach you that, but how are you gonna learn without participating in something where theres winners and losers and stresses teamwork, camaraderie, dedication, etc.

Slackers may never learn those type lessons if they don't participate in something...anything in high school

No marching bands, pep rallies and cheerleaders for basketball aren't the same. Homecoming just doesn't make as much sense when it's not paired with a football game.
