such an economic player with amazing ability to create emotion with so little notes.

His playing on the Layla album in 1970 with Derek & the Dominos was even better than his Cream period imo. I've always thought he's had a badass and smooth playing style.

Stevie Ray Vaughn

love me some SRV, lightning fast chops and always played tasteful stuff.

Knopfler and Allman are a given.

Leo Kottke needs a mention though he's not electric. Incredibly clean guitarist, though.

Gary Moore made his guitar literally cry. Dude had some serious demons and used his guitar to exorcise most of them, but he couldn't get them all.

LINK Solo starts at 5:50, but the whole song is incredible.

Sorry about the ad at the beginning. It's probably a political ad.

I love Trey but I've never really considered him a "clean" guitar player. Maybe when he was still sharp but he seems to get lost in jams a lot now.

Joe Bonamassa has a DVD of him playing an all acoustic set in the Vienna Opera House that kind of puts him on this list for me.

i'll mention steve howe, since i don't see him listed anywhere. nearly all the sounds from his guitar aren't aided by distortion...
