Earnings today? I googled and the first headline was about HBO offering stand-alone. Didn't that news come out this morning?

At $8/month, are people really anticipating a drop in Netflix subscriptions due to HBO's announcement?

Earnings beat targets but new subscribers fell short. That is quite a fall

Thats pretty steep but they'll bounce back. Picking up shares at ~70 when the whole "spin off the online from mail into two companies" debacle back in 2011 makes me still way ahead. I sometimes wonder how dominate their market share is and if a new player can come up with a way to do it better. Doubt it, but it'll be interesting to see.

I think the HBO stand alone deal will actually help netflix. It will get more people away from cables providers and push them towards only having streaming services

Nice. For $45 year I'll subscribe when Silicon Valley season starts, cancel when it's over.

Netflix got beat up because of the slowing of the pace of new subscriptions.

Netflix is going to experience more and more competition in the streaming space as more and more people cut cable. Their deals will get more expensive and they will have to spend more per customer. They will be fine if they keep crushing it with the original content essentially turning themselves into HBO+.

This. NetFlix's advantage is that they have all that data on what we like to watch. That's partly why they shifted priority from movies to TV several years ago.

Consider that you already pay that, on top of whatever you pay your provider in order to have HBO...
