So I am working on my open enrollment and doing life insurance for myself and family. It got me thinking...how much does a funeral cost? I mean soup to nuts. Casket, burial site or cremation, wake, funeral...the whole thing.

And to those with recent experience, sorry for your loss.

Depends on how much you want to spend. It can add up quick. If you want to spend $10,000 on a coffin you can.

In Louisiana, workers' comp gives you $7500 for the funeral should one of your family members die on the job.

It really depends on the bells and whistles you want. Can get them really cheap.

10-15k should be sufficient though.

Focus your attention for life insurance on the topics of unpaid medical bills and long term support of your family without your income.

10-15k
Recent and personal experiences. That's everything. Now depending on head stone etc you could go higher.

What happened to the good ol' days when you could build your own pine box, shove the body in it, dig a hole, bury it, say a few words and get back to life?

That's like $30 worth of material from Lowes... and I'm sure somebody has a shovel laying around.

12-18K.

As someone said, plot is huge. My wife's grandmother has a plot in Metairie worth 75k.

You need more life insurance than the simple cost of a funeral.

Annual salary x however many years you have left to work
+
Number of children x average private school tuition x however many years of school they have left (if you're sending them to private school)
+
Minimum of $10,000 a year for college x number of children you want to send to college
+
Any outstanding debt you currently have
=
Amount of life insurance you need

This amount will be over $1,000,000 - just so you know. It's likely it will be much more than that. 95% of Americans do not have as much life insurance as they truly need in order to allow their family to continue living the standard of living they currently are.
Let that sink in --- the resulting amount is not to make them "rich". It's simply to allow them to continue living the same way they are.

You're welcome.
