The city of Houston has issued subpoenas demanding a group of pastors turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality, gender identity or Annise Parker, the city’s first openly lesbian mayor. And those ministers who fail to comply could be held in contempt of court.

quote:

I predicted that the government would one day try to silence American pastors. I warned that under the guise of “tolerance and diversity” elected officials would attempt to deconstruct religious liberty.

I'm thinking Mayor Parker is taking things a little too far.

Worth going to jail over, imo. Liberals used to value the first amendment.

Jefferson would say it's time to start America over.

Oh my, this action has about as much chance of succeeding as he-- freezing over. And I hope it comes back to haunt her!

It seems like parody because we've been told this will never happen.

Meh. If they're telling people not to vote for her, just pull their tax exempt status.

If they're just talking about the subjects, leave it the hell alone.

Which is completely not the jurisdiction of the city.

Why is it city government's business what they are telling people?

Definitely not. This mayor kind of reminds me of Cartman in the last episode of South Park.

Tremendous overreach if true, however, Todd Starnes is notoriously full of shite.

I think this is the crux of the matter:

quote:

The subpoenas are just the latest twist in an ongoing saga over the Houston’s new non-discrimination ordinance. The law, among other things, would allow men to use the ladies room and vice versa. The city council approved the law in June.

The Houston Chronicle reported opponents of the ordinance launched a petition drive that generated more than 50,000 signatures – far more than the 17,269 needed to put a referendum on the ballot.

However, the city threw out the petition in August over alleged irregularities.

After opponents of the bathroom bill filed a lawsuit the city’s attorneys responded by issuing the subpoenas against the pastors.

The pastors were not part of the lawsuit. However, they were part of a coalition of some 400 Houston-area churches that opposed the ordinance. The churches represent a number of faith groups – from Southern Baptist to non-denominational.

So the mayor didn't just issue subpoenas for funzies. It is in response to a lawsuit.

Now, that said, it's still ridiculous, just not as over-the-top crazy land as first glance would make it appear.

This is clearly some type of political payback. What in the sermons could possibly be of use in a case about referendum irregularities? Is their argument that they hope to catch the ministers urging their churches to commit vote fraud? If there is some evidence of this, that's one thing...wild, politically motivated legal fishing trips in church infested waters is another.

City subpoenas pastors' sermons in equal rights ordinance case

quote:

Houston's embattled equal rights ordinance took another legal turn this week when it surfaced that city attorneys, in an unusual step, subpoenaed sermons given by local pastors who oppose the law and are tied to the conservative Christian activists that have sued the city.
