Lowe with 33 Predictions- Only Pels Related Inside

14. The same eight teams will make the Western Conference playoffs
quote:
Everyone below the Spurs-Thunder-Clippers triumvirate is one big injury away from disaster, but the same goes for the Pelicans, Suns, and Nuggets. If Tyreke Evans starts, the Pelicans will have zero reliable depth beyond Ryan Anderson, and they’ll have some spacing issues playing Evans, Anthony Davis, and Omer Asik together.
The Pelicans have to figure out the optimal fit of all their ball handlers after a season of injuries. The potential is there; some of the lineups that figure to play a ton this season blitzed the league in limited minutes last season.
quote:
16. Teams will shoot less than 50 percent in the restricted area when Anthony Davis and Omer Asik share the floor.
Yeah, good luck. That would be a stingier number than any team put up last season, and even stingier than what Indiana surrendered with Hibbert walling off the basket, per NBA.com.
This has a better chance of coming true if Monty Williams drops both his bigs back against the pick-and-roll after having Davis scramble around the 3-point arc over Brow’s first two seasons. Williams had a courtside side for Team USA’s World Cup run, when Tom Thibodeau had Davis sit back like Noah and alter every shot opponents dared attempt in the paint
quote:
23. Jason Smith will emerge as New York’s best two-way big man.
Smith isn’t a great defender, but he’s miles better than the comedy duo of Amar’e Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani. Smith has decent mobility against the pick-and-roll, and enough hops to offer rim protection as a helper.
He won’t try 3s or fancy baseline spin moves; Smith knows his limits and is good at what he does. He’s a 45 percent–plus midrange shooter, mostly on pick-and-pops, and he should take to the triangle better than the lumbering Samuel Dalembert.
He also predicts Gerald Green will be traded and Jeff Green is a likely trade. However, the Pels have no assets so a trade here would be tricky.

No "Pellies"?
I am disappoint. Zach Lowe is the man though.
Btw did Lowe ever comment on our court now that it's released?

If Reke is at the 3 I'd dare teams to treat him like Aminu.

As always, Lowe just nails it. Something else interesting he put about the Pelicans was the draft revision vote about to happen.
"Under the NBA’s new proposal, the lottery drawing would determine the first six picks. That makes it more likely for New Orleans to barely miss the playoffs, start at something like no. 13 in the lottery order, and draw its way into the no. 5 spot — coughing up a more valuable pick than expected. That is their worst-case scenario."
So it might benefit the Pelicans to keep the old system and they might vote with the Sixers. But it's going to pass either way.
I hated that we let Smith go. He was a hustler and a good tweener PF/C. He was the perfect back-up for Davis. I think we'll regret that move, although having Anderson and getting Asik didn't leave much room for him..
This is hard to swallow. He also mentioned that the Wolves and Bucks will be looking to dump wings. None of those teams are going to bite on Gordon in a trade, so we literally have nothing to offer.

Do you want assets to get Gerald Green or Asik? I'm happier with Asik. If we're lucky either Jimmer or Rivers will step up and shine as the 4th guard. If Jimmer does what Morrow did, surely he'd have some trade value, playoff teams are always looking for veteran shooting off the bench.

Who's the 3?

Well, that's the thing. When Reke, Jrue and 'Stone are in the game together, it seems Reke should have the ball in his hands a lot since the other two can be spot-up shooters. Will that happen?

No doubt, that seemed to happen more when he started playing major minutes or starting. Always a good back-up and a good guy that the fans really loved. I know that doesn't always mean a whole lot, but sometimes that should be taken into account. I'd much rather have kept Smith and dumped Ajinca, even if Ajinca was a better player (which I'm not sure if he is)..

I think the team might have too if that had been an option. But the economics of the situation really made the choice Smith vs Salmons (our room level exception), not Smith vs. Ajinca. Based on preseason we still may have chosen poorly

I sort of agree. If Monty continues to run the same half court sets with strict roles and movements, it won't matter. Why have multiple ball handlers if only one gets to create?
But Lowe's point also has merit with the Asik/Davis pair.
Do we really want Davis working exclusively from outside the paint? The 3 headed guard monster worked because Anderson created space for everyone. Asiks man is not stepping beyond the paint. If Davis is working in there, that's two big defenders protecting the rim. It's not unsolvable, but the spacing is certainly more complicated with Asik and Evans.
Of course if the defense improves enough due to Asik, a decrease in offense is fine.
I'm happy Davis has a jumper. He needs to use it, but asking him to be an Aldridge level volume jump shooter would be a basketball atrocity.

One thing I've been pleased with in the preseason highlights is Asik finishing competently around the basket. I was a little worried we were getting an elite defender with Stiemsma level offense, but if Asik can convert easy dump offs then it won't matter if his man is in the paint. He just needs to catch the pass.

Ajinca also costs a good bit less than what smiht would've commanded.
I like Ajinca at 800K than smith at 3+ mil.
Ajinca has a pretty decent offensive game imo. He's not the pick and pop guy smith is but he's adequate.
Monty also fell in love with the smith pick and pop play too much.

He's not a guy defenses worry about, but he is useful as a screener and a competent finisher at the rim like a Tyson Chandler or DeAndre Jordan. He just is nowhere near that class of an athlete or finisher. Make no mistake, his offense will mainly come from offensive rebounds, but he isn't abominable.

I don't claim to be the basketball analyst that some of you are. Never have. But I've made a fricking good living off of being a slightly distanced observer who makes unconventional, but pretty consistently accurate, judgments in all sorts of contexts. (There's a book on this, but I'm too lazy to pull up the cite.)
And I say this. I am going to crow like a mofo when the Pelicans surprise this season and we see a roster that actually works.
The foregoing assumes that injuries are not an overwhelming factor this season. Anyone may feel free to bookmark this thread. Pray, please do.
