re: Drew Brees ranks 17th in the NFLPosted by Noplacelikehome on 10/14/14 at 11:37 am to TigerBait1127
I'm not taking away from the drops (and the not called drops) that have happened, but the Saints are top 10 in the league in Drop% with 8 drops on 216 targets.
I'm not sure where you are getting your numbers from. I am trusting sportingcharts' drop stats.
Cruz - 6 on 41
White - 5 on 40
Thomas - 4 on 55
Benjamin - 4 on 55
Gronk - 4 on 46
Jackson - 3 on 60
Watkins - 3 on 47
Cobb - 3 on 41
Dez - 3 on 57
Brown - 3 on 61
TY - 3 on 59
Moore - 3 on 8
Calvin - 3 on 37
Colston 2 on 29
Keep complaining, but WR drops is not the problem with this team.
It has a lot to do with a defense that is:
- Last in Takeaways
- 30th in Sacks
- 24th in Pass yards per game
- 16th in Rush yards per game
- 26th in QB rating against
- 23rd in yards allowed per game
- 28th in points allowed per game
From my limited research the Saints aren't top 15 in any defensive category.

I'm using ProFootballFocus. I know for a fact that Colston has at least 4 drops

Off the top of my head, this is wrong.
He had 1 vs Tampa Bay on the final drive in regulation (should have been another fumble IMO).
He had 1 vs Minnesota coming on third down.
He had 2 vs Atlanta. 1 in the 4th quarter over the middle, and another one the play before his fumble

This team has several problems. Saying the problem is silly. Interior blocking has been a major problem, but is it the problem?

It's the main problem, but not the problem. Brees' best asset is his vision of the field and his ability to visualize a play before and during its progression. For this reason he needs a clean pocket, which starts with interior blocking. Also playing a pocket QB starts with consistent footwork; which can't be established if you are always looking for pressure up the middle.
I don't like saying "the problem" either, but if we get better play on the line we'll get better play out of Brees. His passes will be on-target, he won't be throwing behind his intended receiver as much, and he will have the ability to throw it deep. I don't see how people use his lack of passing down-field this year as the prime example of his regression. Blocking has been very bad this year, and the first time it has been this bad in the interior in probably 6-7 years here. My point is if they fix this problem the rest will get fixed over the course of the season.

The line has to improve for us to win games. Period. If they figure out what's going on with Evans and address it, we'll see a much better performance from Brees.
I'll do that for you: Age. He struggled at times last year. Another year just adds to his decline. He's old. No fixing it. A big reason Brees is playing bad is poor oline play, unbalanced offense and WRs who don't get open.

He finished 4th last year in pass blocking efficiency and his struggles last year where directly linked to injury.
There is no way this is just due to getting old. It isn't a cliff, its a steady decline and his run blocking has been great

I've seen plenty of players fall off a cliff with 1 year in age decline. Evans has been showing decline for a few years now. Colston showed it last year and he barely exists this year. Do you think Colston's problems have nothing to do with age either? He looks like he's running in slow motion on routes and all the DBs just sit on them.

Hey its impossible to have consecutive year in and year out consistent stats at QB! Just ask Peyton Manning ....oh wait

Almost like he's not getting hit. He has the lowest pressure rate in the NFL year in and year out

That's another issue...whether people want to admit it or not Brees is on the decline. They have no debate his arm strength gets worse every year but part of his problem could be an injury related problem we don't know about and his WRs suck. Sorry. We don't have WRs this year outside Cooks. Stills disappeared after a promising rookie season, Colston is probably done after this year, Meachem is well Meachem. This offense needs someone other than Graham in it. Time to rebuild on that side of the ball and it starts with offensive line.

theory of 150...our line is old. It's time for Lelito...Jahri can still play at a high level.
it's far from unheard of for a perennial pro bowl guard to play at a high level at 31

There is easily a debate on the decline of his arm strength. He had the best deep ball stats in the NFL last season

If you have been watching him he almost always underthrows them too. Been a problem for several years now and does seem to get worse. No way is he intentionally doing it all the time. Any pass over 40 yards it's coming behind the WR where they have to stop for it. This year it's horrible. He can't even throw guys open on 30 yard passes. He never had great deep throw accuracy but he always got it to them. He never looked this bad though. Makes you wonder if his injury in preseason was worse than we know.

Are you kidding me?
You have no idea what you are talking about. He has a historically great deep ball accuracy wise.
He completed over 50% of his deep passes in 2009 and had an accuracy % of 58.7%
Last year, he finished second in deep yards while putting up 15 TDs to 2 Ints

Like that 46 yarder to Stills that he put right on the spot? If you've been watching, you'd realize that the interior pressure has been ridiculous causing no room to step into the deep ball. Add the injury to Stills...

Listen, Drew virtually had almost zero preseason work so in actuality the first few games were his preseason games of him knocking the rust off. Plus he has been getting lots of pressure up the middle and his throwing lanes are not there for him. And he's just trying to do too much due to a bad defense.
I have long wished for Drew to have more talent surrounding him. He is often called to win it on his own, but, that's not fair to him or anyone else.

Several years? SEVERAL years? What in the hell are you talking about? Do you even watch the games? Brees has been nothing short of amazing from 2006 and on. Is he getting better since 2011? No, age does show regardless of what he will claim. But he is still a top 3 QB.
I am not one to call someone out on something, but saying that Drew Brees has consistently under-thrown receivers in his tenure as a Saint has got to be one of the dumbest fricking things I have ever read on a sports forum. It's like saying Jerry Rice was pretty good but he wasn't fast enough to be dominant. JFC I need a drink now.

Lol at the age is affecting him. He's fine. Yall said this two years ago too. The entire team play has been bad but it's improving

Well statistically Brees is one of the least sacked in the league this year.
A testament to how good Brees' pocket awareness is. He may have the best of all time.
The interior oline pass blocking has been abysmal for the Saints this year. Until that gets cleaned up Brees will continue to dump off to running backs and take the underneath routes. The oline is not giving him enough time for the deep routes to develop which negates Brees' ability to set his feet and deliver the ball accurately. It's been a couple years like this now.

Pass blocking has been subpar but the receiving core is lacking this year. Jimmy and Cooks are our only above average receiving threats.
