LF--Will his 4.3 speed translate into a "first burst"?

To me, it wasn't so much his vision improving that led to LF's "coming out" against Florida. He ran with violence and anger, trucked people, and was a mean SOB.

His cuts while maintaining the same speed are amazing. But what I haven't seen, is a "first burst" of speed where he simply hits the corner or the hole hard with straight line speed and outruns people. I anticipated this since he has a forty time that would be the envy of many NFL wide receivers.

I suppose 40 time does not always equal straight line football speed. Is it unreasonable to anticipate "first burst" speed from LF? For you that watched him extensively while he was at St. Aug, did he demonstrate this in high school? His 4.3 speed doesn't seem to help at all on kickoff returns.

Is this "first burst" speed something Leonard still has to learn to use at the college level, or was he mostly a combination of power, vision, and cuts in high school?

I don't know but I cringe on every kickoff with him as the return man.
1. He doesn't look to have the speed needed on returns.
2. Way too valuable of an asset to to risk injury.

He has the speed but he's trying to read the blocks from what I see. Seems like he finds the initial hole, but can't find the second to take for a big gain or all the way.

He gets better finding and hitting the hole every game. Our O line has not exactly opened large gaping holes, with exception of last game, to just take a step and be gone. Most of our backs runs and Fournette runs, are him meeting someone near the line and getting a few tough yards, or great vision on the cutback. We continue to improve blocking, he may get that chance to just take off with that "first burst".

LF is a workhorse and our best back. But he's neither explosive nor elusive in an elite way.

Has there been any real explanation why he's still on KO return duty? This just makes absolutely no sense at all.

Several times I thought he would be gone on an outside run but just barely got tripped up and fell forward for about 5 yards. I kept wanting to see him out run that end and it seemed for the most part he didn't quite get there.

Fournette's success this weekend is due to him not doing what you are asking him to do. The game is finally slowing down for him. He is being more patient and choosing his own own holes rather than simply trying to hit the hole as fast as he can.

The worst thing fornette could do is what you are suggesting.

Fournette has elite burst for a guy his size. If there is a critique for him at this point, it is that he still runs too upright in traffic...although he does seem able to get his pad level down in the open field.

I don't ever see a "first burst" being 230.

This...lower your expectations. He's probably a 4.45 guy which is still good at 230 lbs

For his size he has unbelievably elite explosiveness and elusiveness.

Reggie Bush is 4.35. LF is not 4.35.

Bleacher report lolz. He doesnt run a 4.35 either. If he ran at the combine tomorrow he'd be a high 4.4 or low 4.5 which is absurd for his size.

Maybe if he slimmed down to 205lbs he could get the kind of explosive burst you're talking about. I personally prefer him bigger and harder to bringn down

Do you remember all of the guys that have returned kicks at LSU in the past 10 years? Many times it has been the best players. It does make sense because it is a chance to put points on the board.

KO return is a different skill set. I'm convinced it's not LF's niche.

Granted, I thought having TM7 on punt returns all season back in '11 was a waste of time until the Arkansas game.
