Sorry to start another AT&T thread, but it doesn't really fall under my other.

I have an ATT contract with 2 iPhones (unlimited everything) and pay $160/month.

New job has a company provided phone, so I don't need the iphone anymore. I can terminate my half of the contract and get my bill down to $90/month. Termination fee + proceeds from selling phone, are a wash.

I, for some reason, hate to give up my unlimited plan, even though I don't need it right now. Is $156 for 2 unlimited phones (wife rarely uses 2 gigs, I use <5 gig) so good that I can't walk away?

I know data use will only increase over time, but is there any way to justify an extra $70/month for the foreseeable future to hold onto unlimited data?

There is no use in keeping an unlimited plan b/c they will throttle the data on it to where you can't use more than 10gb anyway.

I got rid of my unlimited data because I felt like my phone was slow and I have immediately noticed a difference. Regardless of what they say they do I have seen better data coverage and more speed on the road. Plus it is a lot cheaper.

Thanks for the advice. I think you guys are right.

They throttle us at 5 gigs, which happened to me once (watched netflix on vacation). I can share 10 Gb cheaper than I pay now, I think, anyways.

I heard thats when it was but I got to where it was slow regardless of how much usage I had.

They are really trying to get everyone off of Unlimited, for sure.

I honestly had never shopped around packages, but I could definitely save money reducing to a tiered plan, but hated to do it.

Be careful with this one--they try to bait you in by offering it for $15 a month per phone, but once you upgrade to a new phone (and pay the $200 for the new phone itself), they increase the bill to $40/month for the upgraded phone. Oh yeah, they won't tell you this when convincing you to upgrade.

Or you can "rent" the phone for a total of ~$42/month. It's all a rip-off

Yes it is a rip off. I was forced into this cause my phone was broken. They have made it so complicated.

My bill was going up no matter what. It was either pay for the phone and lose the $25 discount/month for mobile share or rent the phone for $31.25/month for the 64gb iPhone 6.

You aren't renting it

You do get to keep it

I know, it's just paying in installments. iPhone 6 64gb is $750 without contract. 31.25x 24 is $750.

This. AT&T kinda messed up with NEXT by emphasizing that you can trade the phone in after X installments.

It makes it look like a leasing plan, when in fact, the best way to use NEXT is to pay the phone off and sell it if you want to switch early.

Right. Where they win is with those who upgrade before paying the phone off, and have to turn the phone in. In that case, the person did lease it.

If you wait till paid off, you are free to sell or trade in, etc.

those people are the dumb ones

typically you've paid off 75% of the phone's value at that point, and you can choose to pay off the balance and keep the phone to resell while still getting to upgrade to the new one

if the phone is worth more than you owe on it, its dumb to trade it in, but people will no doubt do it anyway

What happens when you go over? I am sure the bury you with fees for going over. At least with unlimited, they can throttle you, but you can never go over your data usage.

Going over is actually only $15 per gb which is not too extreme. It's not like they used to do about going over your minutes

AT&T Next isn't renting the phone, it's buying the phone. Once you've made the payments it's yours to keep. The old "cheap upgrade" option where you pay a monthly premium regardless of whether you've already paid for the device is the method more akin to renting.

I really can't believe how many people view a more transparent option that lets people reduce their cost if they want to as getting ripped off.

The people that kept the same phone for 3 or 4 years really got screwed looking back

You were paying the subsidy for the phone basically even though you weren't getting the perk of that cheap upgrade.

Now it's way better for those people, but it's almost exactly the same for the people on the old 24 month upgrade cycle

That's the thing, I don't remember my bill ever increasing when using my 2 year upgrade for a new device. I guess the plan was already jacked up. I don't recall though, because I have been back and forth from personal to company to personal in the last 7 years or so.

I guess I was naïve, but in the past, the 2 yr upgrade price seemed like a benefit for signing another 2 yr agreement, and no change was made to monthly plan price.

Correct. In the last year my bill has been cut almost in half and I get more data now.

This really isn't about one plan being better than the other, some people like upgrading constantly, and for them nothing has changed. But for people that keep their phone for more than 18-24 months, they now don't have to keep paying for something they aren't using. Unless you were regularly upgrading your phone before, you were giving AT&T more money than they deserved.
