The Tigers will not accomplish their goals this year (no NC, SEC title or SEC West title). But this year is still very important.

People do not like hearing the "we're young" excuse and I get that. We pay Les Miles $4+ million, our coordinators each make > $1 million and we expect them to take these 18, 19 and 20 year olds and go kick arse.

But sometimes you do have to play the long game. Take Mississippi State for example. In 2012, they went 8-5 (4-4 in the SEC) and last year they were 7-6 (3-5 in the SEC). Now they are 7-0 and hell has frozen over as they are ranked #1. Auburn in 2011 was 8-5 (4-4 in the SEC) and in 2012 they were 3-9 (0-8 in the SEC). In 2013, they nearly won the national title. In 2009, LSU went 9-4 (5-3 in the SEC) and in 2010, we were 11-2 (6-2 in the SEC). The following year, we went 13-0 before the Mulligan.

My point is that, with the exception of Alabama(*), most top tier teams have a year or two of growing pains that ultimately result in the experience necessary to pull off magical years like LSU 2011, Auburn 2013 and Miss State 2014.

I realize it is disappointing to see our young bucks whipped on by veteran teams like Auburn and Miss State, but it is unsurprising to anyone being realistic.

Look at 2015.
QB - Two returners with significant game experience.
RB - Two returners with significant game experience.
FB - One returner with significant game experience.
WR - Three returners with significant game experience (four if Dural comes back)
TE - Three returners with significant gamne experience
Oline - Three returning starters, two others with significant game experience. A bevy of other underclassmen.

DE - Three returners with significant game experience, plus several rising sophomores
DT - Five returners with significant game experience plus Valentine and LFAO
OLB- Four returners with significant gamne experience
MLB - Beckwith plus Garrett int he wings
CB - Two elite corners, plus Dwayne Thomas, plus Collins plus Paris with Toliver coming in
S- Three returners with significant experience plus C. Thompson.

2015 can be really special. Even without recruits, we can field a super talented team (which has not been the case in a while). 2014 is the year where the experience is built, the rookie errors are made and the kinks worked out. But 2015 and 2016 should both be years in which we compete for national championships.

So while this year is not the most enjoyable, look forward to the future. And remember that all of these freshman and sophomores getting a little lesson this year from veteran teams will be in a position to return the favor very, very soon.

(*) As much as we hate it, they consistently bring in the best crop of 25 year after year and thus have been more consistent. Embarrassingly, much of the reason for this are kids from Louisiana (e.g, Lacey, Collins, Robinson) who buy into what Bama is selling. Perhaps if our fanbase was a little more patient and didn't react to every bad play by calling our coach a buffoon, Bama might not be as appealing. Just a thought.

Alabama is currently having a year like LSU and it will be shown when they play the top tier teams. LSU just had the misfortune or fortune to play two of the best teams in CFB almost back to back. Bama will lose 1-2 more games this year and possibly 3.

I agree with your post though, we are young and this team will improve each week. I still think we can make some noise this year although not NC and next year will be awesome!

You mention Miss. St and Auburn, two teams with offenses LSU can only dream of. Seriously, if you gave Les Miles the best QB, RB, and WR in college football along with a solid O-Line he would give you the 20th ranked offense at best.

And I'd take it. Auburn is currently ranked 23rd, Florida State is 32nd, Ole Miss is 45th.

I think Auburn is a top 15 team, but it isn't one of the 5 best.

Nice post. Patience is the key to success in achieving anything that is worthwhile.

Sure...Mississippi State is the big dog this year, but when those seniors (16) graduate, what will they be next year ?

Our time will come.

perhaps Les didn't realize that having the top-ranked offense was the goal...

Miss State is a perfect example of experience and patience. They were 9-15 in the SEC over the prior 3 seasons.

Wat was our offense ranked in 2003, 2007 and 2011? I bet it was borderline top 25.

We have the RB (Fournette) to take us to the promised land. We have some really good WRs and I think Harris will ultimately be the guy and be better than any championship QB we have had (no offense to Mauck, Flynn or JJ). But the real trick for LSU is to get the defense going. We WILL have the best secondary in CFB next year. If Kwon comes back, and Beckwith keeps the job, the LB corps can be solid. And I like the way Godchaux and LaCouture are progressing.

Good and accurate post...

Thanks, hopefully, some our more vocal and less thoughtful readers/posters can finally understand what is actually going on this year...

I don't think they will. They will keep harping on why our offense is not like Baylor's

Yep. We play more draft ineligible (i.e., FR, RSFR, and SO) than draft eligible (RSSO, JR, RSJR, SR, RSSR) players on both sides of the ball. This is among the players who play "regularly," with five or more appearances.

In 2015, provided the NFL attrition isn't that bad, the equation is flipped on both sides of the ball.

The only problem with patience and waiting out a season or two is recruiting. As we saw from the 2012 class where we only got one DL, a single bad recruiting class can really hurt the program. By bad - I don't mean rankings, but a class that doesn't meet the team's needs.

If we lose too many games this year, we'll lose a few blue chips.

Who are you worried about losing? The 2015 class is gonna be pretty disappointing. The best player in state in the trenches is committed to Notre Dame

I think the only real concerns are that Harris should start and pretty much all of the draft eligible players need to be smart and come back

Nah it doesn't work that way. Sometimes recruits want to go where they can get PT, and so it can pay off to go where there is opportunity. Look at Ole Miss, for an example.

Agreed. If I were a good O-line, LB or DT prospect, and LSU was anywhere on my radar, I'd SERIOUSLY consider them. The Tigers have the necessary skill players in place for the next several seasons, plenty of opportunity for me to get on the field, and coaches proven able to get to the big game.
