Any Dannys on here? (other than me hahaha...haha...heh...)

I have a lot of friends that swear by them, but they're just so 70's soft rock lite-jazz sounding to me, it's hard to give them a shot. I like a few songs (Peg, Kid Charlemagne, Haitian Divorce) but for the most part I'm not too sure about them.

Can I get any album ranking lists? An explanation about why people like The Dan so much? Some must hear deep cuts? Any solid live youtube vids? Stuff like that

Thanks MB

I almost started this thread like a week ago. I'm eagerly awaiting the responses.

I don't know about getting you into Steely Dan but I'm sure Eddie would love to assist in getting Steely Dan into you.

I'm listening to Peg right now

The saxophone hook in that song might be the catchiest thing ever

The bass kills it in that song too

I wore out a bunch of vinyl Steely Dan albums back before vinyl was hip. Everything from the 70's is solid. Can't Buy a Thrill is probably my favorite of theirs. They kind of lost my interest around Gaucho.

all of the studio versions have been removed from youtube...which sucks for "can't buy a thrill" since 3 of the songs were actually sung by studio musicians, as well as a lot of other stuff where the album versions should definitely be heard.

Steve Gadd is featured on Aja (not the entire album, just the song). One of my all time favorite songs.

For some reason, I don't like Can't Buy a Thrill.

Love Gaucho, Aja, Katy Lied, Royal Scam.

Any Major Dude, Babylon Sisters, Bad Sneakers, and Caves of Altamira are probably my favorite tunes.

For the pure Dan experience, no question. I like most of it for what it is - just a little bit of everything. What stands out is the precision of everyone, while still sounding casual and "jammy" - not just anybody can pull that off. Chicago, EWF, and even then, not as precise and clean as Steely Dan.

ETA: Pretzel Logic is good, too - for that Skunk Baxter experience...

Dirty Work is great. Definitely a drunken sing along song

Reelin in the Years is a good rocker song

Kid Charlagmane is my favorite however
