A $20 million Courtyard by Marriott for downtown Baton Rouge was officially announced Monday.
The previously reported hotel, located at 260 Third Street, will have an estimated 147 rooms and be owned by developer Windsor Aughtry Co., based in Greenville, South Carolina.
Nashville, Tennessee-based Hospitality America will manage the hotel, scheduled to open in the third quarter of 2016.
Plans are for the hotel to have about 2,000 square feet of meeting space, an exercise room and a business center. There will be about 1,500 square feet of retail space on the first floor available for lease.
Windsor Aughtry developed the Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown Baton Rouge. Hospitality America is the Hampton Inn’s management company.
Representatives of Windsor Aughtry and Hospitality America participated in the Courtyard by Marriott announcement Monday with Mayor-President Kip Holden and Downtown Development District officials.
The site for the hotel is owned by Third Street Acquisition LLC, according to records at the East Baton Rouge Clerk of Court’s Office. Tom Adamek and Gordon LeBlanc Jr., partners in Stonehenge Capital, own Third Street Acquisition.
260 Third St. was formerly the site of the Istrouma Hotel. The hotel was demolished in March 1969, eight years after closing. Capitol Bank and Trust Co. bought the hotel in 1966 with plans for a new multistory bank building. But those plans were abandoned, and the site became a parking lot. The new hotel will pay tribute to the property’s history by having a courtyard named after the Istrouma Hotel.

about time Marriott got a piece of the action downtown.
nice addition. The competition between Marriott and Hilton will be good, even though the Courtyard isn't a top of the line hotel equivalent to Hilton's Captial Center. I still enjoy Courtyards.

There's tons of parking downtown as long as you're not a fatass and can walk a few blocks.

won't be long before downtown really becomes a downtown
i imagine homeowners close to the area are happy

Let's hope that is where it is going. They need to start filling in those damn surface parking lots. They are an eye sore to downtown. Build one garage to make up for the spaces those lots leave behind.
This has been a long time coming, we just need to get to the point where that land is worth more than the $5/hour per car that the lots currently make.

Downtown Property owners are a happy bunch, upping my leases as they come up for renewal.
