As mentioned earlier, Wise, Zealot w/+1, and I dined at the new Johnny Sanchez. Reservations at 7:30, full house as expected.

We were promptly seated to our table, and gave our drink order (2 Sanchez Margaritas, 1 house, and 1 red wine didn't catch the varietal). After our drink order, some guy name John (didn't catch his last name Best or something) came and said hello. Was very friendly and offered to bring us some of the guac and stated we must try the grasshoppers. We abided and began to look over the menu.

As we waited for our drinks, an order of chips with 2 styles of salsa (red & green) were delivered. They were both tasty, but I feel could have used a little extra kick. Also, the chips were 1/2 regular corn chip and 1/2 plantain chip. The plantains were delicious.

Our drinks finally arrived (may have been 10 minutes) and we proceeded to order the rest of our meal. We didn't skimp...
We ordered:
Tacos
1 grilled sweetbread
1 cabrito (cripsy goat)
1 beef barbacoa
2 carne asada
1 shrimp
Quesadilla
1 squash blossom
Side
Crispy Brussels Sprouts
Sopes- beef cheek/bone marrow/pickled onions

The drinks were all good even though the glasses were small for a $14 margarita. I thought the Sanchez Margarita had nice balance made for easy drinking. Wise's house (grilled pineapple) margarita contained no pineapple so he may not have received his order. He did state he enjoyed the drink. Wine must have been at least decent as it was the only drinked ordered 2x.

Food: I thought the guac was ok on it's own, but with the grasshopper (surprisingly very flavorful) it was a nice bite. The grasshoppers were taken down with the quickness. Order the grasshoppers if you get the guac.

The tacos were all big in size and flavor as you would expect. I thoroughly enjoyed the sweetbreads, the chorizo and avocado make for a lovely marriage in a single bite. Not sure Wise was of the same thought on that one. I thought the goat taco was goodas well, the goat was nice and crispy and was balanced well with the pickled cactus and queso fresco(imagine Aaron saying it). I didn't try the shrimp taco, and don't remember Zealot saying much. He can fill in the blank. Ok, this is where it gets a little tricky. The Barbacoa and Carne Asada were both super flavorful, but both had issues. The Barbacoa was pretty damn salty and greasy. My Carne Asada was perfect and delicious, but Wise's was full of gristle. This kind of inconsistency is tough when you're splitting 2 tacos. No room for error.

The Star:
When we ordered, we picked the 4 tacos and said frick it and lets order something else. Sopes! This frickin dish stole the show. The sope is the corn cake base of this dish. It's topped with beef cheek that has been slow cooked and tastes absolutely amazing. Oh, and it's got bone marrow on the side to top the whole thing off. They should name this dish "Gilding the Lily"!

We did our best and finished what we could, but our best wasn't enough last night. The bill was more than reasonable, though I'm not sure if we were charged for everything. I didn't get a look at the full receipt.

Overall, I would say this place will print money as it's in a good area and it produces a good product. Yes in week 1 they are working out the kinks, don't expect perfect service if you go soon. If service is paramount for you, just wait. VOR- Wise made a special appeal to that Johnny fella and he stated you and your clients are welcome anytime.

Thankfully there was an Uber driver nearby to pick us up so we didn't have to move very far. I'm still full from that dinner, but excited to hear what others have to say.

Sopes were delicious and for Wise the best plate of the night.

Chips and Salsa were free and very nice…I liked the guac a lot…it had a unique hint of lime moreso than others …adding the grasshoppers gave it the salt that it needed which really set it off…could have been better though just needs to add more kick on the back end…I didn't taste any jalapeños…again you have to get the grasshoppers as they added a great crunch and saltiness to the dish

The Carne Asada tacos were the hit of the night for me…holy cow they were delicious…also look how much protein is on there, the tacos are huge…I will say I had one piece of grizzle and Wise had 3 or 4 which is not good at all but the potential is there for sure

the Squash blossom quesadillas were good but not spectacular…my fiancee asked for jalapeños to be brought out because it also had no kick to it..both of us were surprised by that because Aaron Sanchez loves spicy foods so much…that coupled with the lack of kick in the guac could be improved…also too much cheese we thought in the quesadilla..it still tasted good but room for improvement

The brussel sprouts were the highlight of the night for the ole lady…she liked them better than Peche and I agreed they were amazing…unlike most restaurants, these did not have a hint of butter taste in them…they also used tiny fresh jalapenos as well as pomegranate seeds which I thought was a great combo of flavors

Barbacoa as OBrah said were pretty salty and greasy

the shrimp tacos were good…but the shrimp tasted more like the type of shrimp you would get in a sweet & sour shrimp meal from a chinese place…I would have preferred just grilled shrimp on the taco….still tasty nonetheless

overall, I was very satisfied with my meal and can't wait to go back….our server had a lot of personality, Besh was all over the place making sure things went well. Service did screw up our food by forgetting to put in some of the tacos and the brussel sprouts but they gave them to us for free…it was like having a second meal which was why we all needed a wheelbarrow to get out of there….great addition to the city!

I was thinking, "Surely this is just a name for one of their dishes..."

Also here's a pic of the menu which was slightly different than the one posted yesterday. I imagine it will change often.

I wonder how this will impact Borgne? It seems like given its location it could suck up a lot of the foot traffic and CBD worker traffic.

Completely agree. At this price point and quality, I could see potential problems for Borgne. I'm not sure Borgne is one of the top performers in Besh's portfolio.

Ive always had solid meals at Borgne, but its always seemed too large by half. That is a very big restaurant.

I would still go to Borgne over JS for happy hour, but knowing Besh, wouldn't be surprised to see them start one soon…if so, that will be tough to compete with.

Nice brah but very disappointed you didn't get those great pics you took up. Is it that hard to upload Polaroids ?

Guac had a lil too much lime for me but the salty crunch of the grasshoppers made up for it. The bugs are a must when ordering the guac.

I actually think there was a disconnect between us and the server. Looking back I think those were not different flavors for the house margaritas but instead all of the ingredients in the one cocktail. Compared to the rest of the meal I thought the drinks were pricey considering the size.

Was ok but had too much going on. The organ goodness kind of got lost in the dish.

Was the best of the tacos IMO

quote:

My Carne Asada was perfect and delicious, but Wise's was full of grizzle.

The flavors were great but the grizzle was ridiculous. I'll give them a pass this time.

Was disappointing

Crispy Brussels Sprouts

A must order

Sopes- beef cheek/bone marrow/pickled onions

Was amazing. Will be very hard to not order this on every visit.

I also order charro beans which were the biggest dissapointment of the evening. I freaking love charro beans but it's almost impossible to find good ones in NOLA. Instead of a soup type dish these beans at JS were more like a chili. I'm no expert on charro beans so I'm not sure if this is correct for certain areas but it was like a cup of chili from Wendy's. I had high hopes for this small side dish so I might be overreacting.

Overall it was a really good meal. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5. Some of the small issue with the service I'm sure will be worked out.

Did you ever get your coffee ?

The uber car had dog slobber all over the windows in the back seat. Would not use them again.
