I was puzzled why a law officer would go there first knowing where he'd been. Just heard on WBAP that he was instructed to go there indirectly through..... the CDC. Only link I can find at this point says it was Dallas Co. Medical Director(which Obama praised along with the mayor). They are guided per CDC.

LINK

Also, the wife and the deputy found out about his negative ebola tests from... the news media. HIPAA violation anyone?

It's pretty easy to get around HIPAA in the case of public health emergencies. Your right to medical privacy isn't absolute in this country.

Yes and to the CDC for yet another blunder. It's almost like they are doing their best to make a hard to transmit disease an epidemic.

I did not see that in the link. I only listened (watched) a few seconds of the video, so perhaps it was stated therein.

No.

In this public health scare, it would be very reasonable for the medical people to simply state "we have tested a patient or patients and ALL tests are negative. There is no ebola here". NOT a HIPAA violation and, by inference, the news media can say "Person X does NOT have ebola"

Wrong...hippa is hippa.....it's not that hard to call the patient first. I'm pretty sure they knew where to find him.....actually, with this slapdick cdc, maybe he was at the mall or the movies.

45 CFR 164.512(b) (Download a copy in PDF)

Background

The HIPAA Privacy Rule recognizes the legitimate need for public health authorities and others responsible for ensuring public health and safety to have access to protected health information to carry out their public health mission. The Rule also recognizes that public health reports made by covered entities are an important means of identifying threats to the health and safety of the public at large, as well as individuals. Accordingly, the Rule permits covered entities to disclose protected health information without authorization for specified public health purposes.

And, at the risk of piling on:

quote:

When appropriate, release general information to help dispel public anxiety
In highly charged situations such as disasters, the public may benefit from the release of general
information when specific information cannot be released.

I don't think it was the medical community that released his name. I thought they figured it out by looking at his license plate.

Doubtful, considering that every moron who has a fever and vomits will think they have Ebola.
