The CBGBs connection just doesn't let me put them there.
Yeah, but they really weren't punk either. They're kind of in their own genre I guess.

"I Ran" is the greatest new wave song and one of the greatest one hit wonders ever
Remain in Light is the greatest new wave album

Hard to define them, but U2 helped to define the 80's.

That's a definition I'd like to forget.

U2 of the 80's and 90's were incredible. They were the ultimate trolls.

Gloria is the only song I can still listen to.

Blondie was considered 'New Wave'.

That's always the first band that pops in my head with New Wave.. it really is a catch all for that late 70's/early 80s style of early, more mainstream, alternative music...

Exactly. Everything that WASN'T the establishment was 'New Wave'.

I would have thought all of the below before new wave. I have some sort of new wave block.
American Punk
Contemporary Pop/Rock
New York Punk

Talking Heads for sure were the kings of that genre but some of the others I liked:
Elvis Costello
The Pretenders
The Police
The Cars *
Joe Jackson
Martha and the Muffins
Dave Edmunds
Nick Lowe
XTC
U2's first couple of albums
R.E.M. (?)
Blondie
B-52's (you either love 'em or hate 'em)
There were also a few bands that were probably more punk than new wave.
The Jam
The Stranglers
The Clash
*The Cars first 2-3 albums were fantastic but damn they put on a shitty concert. How many of you were at that show at the Centroplex in about 1980-81? The Motels opened up for them and stole the show.

No shite.
Damn.
No energy? Just kind of going through the motions out there?

Elliot Easton was a hell of a guitar player, though.

Yeah he was.
Benjamin Orr was solid on bass.
I love the bass line in most Cars songs.

New wave was a marketing term for punk and post-punk, for exactly the reason Alx brought up. The label "punk" kept people away from bands like Talking Heads and Blondie, despite having an accessible sound. So they were plucked from the punk scene and called new wave.
New wave is whatever you want it to be, honestly.

i know I will be in the minority but i really thought the 80s was somewhat thin on great music. It was sandwhiched between the 70s and 90s, which had some really awesome stuff.
anyway, I would go with spaceman 3 as my favorite "new wave" band although I think only in this thread would they count as new wave.

The 80's certainly put out a lot of crap music, but it's probably my favorite decade of music, though some of that extends back to the late 70's. I grew up in the 80's so some of that is nostalgia.
