Things aren't looking good, no matter what our illustrious leader says.

After two months, the U.S.-led aerial campaign in Iraq has hardly dented the core of the Islamic State group's territory. The extremist fighters have melted into urban areas when needed to elude the threat, and they have even succeeded in taking new territory from an Iraqi army that still buckles in the face of militants.

In neighboring Syria, days of airstrikes have been unable to stop militants on the verge of capturing a strategic town on the Turkish border.
quote:
The limited results show the central weakness of the campaign: There is only so much that can be done from the air to defeat an extremist force that has swept over much of Iraq and Syria. The Islamic State fighters have proven elusive and flexible, able to reorganize to minimize the blows. And more importantly, there are almost no allied forces on the ground able to capitalize on the airstrikes and wrest back territory from the militants.

A couple days after the midterms

They are using helicopters from Baghdad. Boots are on the ground.

This sounds accurate. I really think this could backfire for either side, depending on how badly they play the politics of it. It's nearly criminal that that's how almost all of our policy decisions are made.
Republicans, if they gain majorities, may push hard for a ground campaign. Democrats may do the same depending on public outcry.

Pretty sure they already are since the first 300 went over there a few weeks back.

That is the sad truth of it...

Quiet buildups seems to be what is happening...

I said a few months ago by the end of October. That may not happen but if we were on the ground by the end of the year I wouldnt be surprised.

Should we have armed Syrian rebels? Funny, the answer was a resounding No a couple months ago. Now you hear more and more that we should have. Same thing with sending in our soldiers. What a cluster frick.

Yep, and it is going to get worse. Some quiet chatter going around base now.

We have been planning to train 5,000 new soldiers in Saudi Arabia for many months, well, there are 9,000 Kurds already fighting in that northern city. Why don't we go in and start a second front and rescue those fighters and supply them to fight Isis. Then send over a few thousand American soldiers from Afganistan, scheduled to come home, and reroute them into Iraq for a few months and wipe out Isis. The day after the elections it could start by Obama, not before, he's too political.

I wouldn't use a unit who's been fighting in Afghanistan to fight in Iraq/Syria I what would be a more conventional fight, at least at the onset.

Probably something like that.
I wish the president would say "the U.S. helps those who help themselves" a la Nixon. We'l provide the air power as long as those in the region do their part.

Giving weapons to a group called the Islamic Front doesn't sit well with people even if they claim to be moderate.
They hate Assad and they hate ISIS, but what happens if they end up beating both. Do we get that moderate Islamic Country??

I'm sick of arming people that will eventually use those weapons against us.

Reminds me of the Monty Python skit. "We're the People's Front of Judea!"
"Well we're the Judean People's Front! "
"Well we're the Judean People's Front! "
