I'm still not sure what the point of a cover letter is.

I wrote one in college for a career training class. Got an "A." on it. Plugged in different words here and there when sending out resumes after graduation. Got job in May of 2013. Not used since.

Just keep it short and to the point while highlighting what you can offer. Something like:
Dear Hiring Manager:
I am writing in response to your opening for __________.
I can offer you ___ years of experience with _____, extensive knowledge of _________, and a strong passion for ______, all of which make me an excellent candidate for this position.
I have attached my resume for your review and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
__________

Hiring managers want a cover letter that sticks out from the rest. Include a riddle or mild joke and something quirky about yourself. If its an energy company or financial firm then say something snarky about Obama. Put it all in verse if you can do it, or in haiku. Something like that.

It was required for the job I was applying for so I sought help.
I don't like them either.

Cover letters are more important than a resume. If you don't have a good one they don't bother.
