That poor deer has something seriously wrong with it. Horrible case of mange i would guess. Never seen anything like that.

demodectic mange

quote:
Mange (Demodectic)
Demodectic mange of white-tailed deer is caused by the mange mite. Although most deer will not show symptoms of mange, those that do will exhibit hair loss and skin thickening with small pus-filled lesions. Mange is primarily spread through contact with an infected deer or its environment. However, mange does not cause a herd health issue and is not a concern for humans. Mange infections are limited to the skin, therefore the meat of an infected deer is safe for human consumption.

We shot a bobcat that had, what looked like, an early onset of mange a few years back. Someone told us they get it from eating trash. No clue if that's factual or not. Pretty disgusting either way.

I'd shoot it, but man, I wouldn't clean that thing with YOUR knife.

The thing with demodectic mange like that is we all have those mites on our body right now, but our immune systems keep them in check. It's only when there is a lapse in the immune system that they proliferate like that deer.
Pick a couple eyebrow hairs out and look at the base with an oil immersion lens and you'll find them.
Sarcoptic mange is the one that is contagious known a scabies.
