Anybody head down to the gulf for drum in the fall/winter? I'm new to BR (recently moved from NC) and have fished Cape Hatteras and the NC outer banks but I know things are a lot different down here. It seems like Grand Isle/Elmer's island are popular choices to fish from the beach. Any thoughts on that, recommendations on where to set up etc? Thanks

Never fished Elmer's or GI in the winter but Bull Reds are on the beaches spawning all fall/winter pretty easy to catch. I would suspect they are at GI.

redfishing is quite good during the fall& winter...

I haven't fished the surf for redfish, but have done quite a bit of it in the marsh...in fact,a popluar combination for guided trips would be duck huntin the morning and then redfish in the afternoon....

I go camp every winter around Christmas. I get on the beach drive some PVC pipe in the sand and throw a chunk of cut fresh mullet as far out as I can. I the. Sit and drink beer until a red takes off with the bait. Only problem is that you only catch big bull reds like this.

LSU2001-It's hard work but someone's got to do it! I look forward to trying your approach ASAP.

Thanks to all for the input!

Fish the passes when tide is moving. Barataria and Caminada, or go to the bridge at Fourchon.

NC according to his post.

OP, if you have access to a boat (i.e. friend who can take you) Last Island, Timbalier, etc. should hold bull reds as well. Cracked crab on the bottom in the surf/pass should get you what you are looking for, plus some stuff you aren't

Haha I'm from around an hour north of Raleigh. How about you? I'm liking your choice of schools (Go Pack!)

kingranch- Yeah, from NC (we call them red drum there). Took me a minute to realize what a "redfish" was when I moved to LA!
