I can't listen to the hidden track on the label because my turntable auto returns when it goes that far. Doh!

What's the difference in an acrylic platter and a basic one?

Acrylic platter is heavier and reduces little vibrations that distorts the sound.

Metal platters (lighter ones) may pick up a slight "ringing" sound due to vibrations. The trick in a platter is to have one that is "dead", meaning one that won't transfer any vibrations from the belt, plinth, or motor and transfer it through the platter to the record to the cantilever.

VPI, interestingly, moved away from acrylic and over to an aluminum platter. They are designed well and don't transfer any vibrations. They are also 2" thick.

There are as many philosophies on proper platter materials as Wings and Wongs in a Chinese phone book though.

When I get a little more free time, I will post some info regarding table set up.

Setting up a table correctly is crucial to getting the best out of the entire record playback system. I can't stress that enough.

Some things on the set up check list:

VTA--Vertical Tracking Angle

VTF--Vertical Tracking Force

VRA--Vertical Rake Angle

Azimuth

Leveling

Isolation

Cartridge Loading (for MC carts)
Cartridge Capacitance (for MM carts)

Platter speed (33.33 rpm)

I set many tables up for folks around the GNO area and a proper set up usually takes a couple hours.

Enjoy the listen...

Shark, over the Thanksgiving break, I spent about 7 hours in Forever Young records in Arlington (360 at I-20). This place is huge (11,000 sq. ft.) and has just about any piece of vinyl you could imagine. I found a few things I'd been searching a while for in there.

I also popped into Josey records--it is not in the same league as Forever Young.

I joined Hastings free club and got $10 off a $20 purchase so I picked up The Head & The Heart self-titled (which I highly recommend) and "Blue Slide Park" by Mac Miller (guilty pleasure).

So I would need to get a phono pre-amp before I could hook up a turntable to my surround sound system? How can I find out if my receiver already has the right hook up?

And could I go out and buy a old school turntable?
