Marriott entered into an agreement to pay a $600,000 fine on Friday, bringing an end to an FCC investigation that found the hotel blocked access to personal Wi-Fi hotspots at one of its hotels while charging guests as much as $1,000 to connect to its own Wi-Fi network. Employees of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, used Wi-Fi monitoring software to find and jam people trying to access the Internet with their own devices, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) claimed. The FCC acted on a tip from someone who had stayed in the hotel during a conference. He said that Wi-Fi hotspots were being blocked while the hotel was charging exhibitors and attendees anywhere from $250 to $1,000 per device.

I'm not sure how I'd react if I was told the wifi charge was $1000. That figure is so absurd I don't know whether I should be amused or insulted.

Hoping to take advantage of companies that just expense it during conventions, glad they got busted.

probably still made money doing it even after the fine

That's insane. I stayed there a couple years ago and I think the daily wifi access was under $20. I just used my LTE data. That just seems like price gouging.
The highest I've ever seen it was in ATL at the Ritz. Something like $30 for 24 hours, but it reset itself at checkout time, so if you paid for it at night it reset itself at 11 AM the next day.

You obviously haven't contracted for Wi-Fi service for a convention. It is nothing short of rape of the exhibitors.

Just went to Nashville (at Gaylord) with my company for a conference. When we saw the price of wifi, we packed a server and a router. Just deployed our app locally and said forget that noise.

last yr we were setup for a business expo and they wanted to charge something like $125 for a electric hookup - I told the guy never mind I would bring my own gas generator - he sternly informed me that I couldn't run a gas unit indoors - I looked at the guy in my best are you that fukin stupid looks I could muster.

Anyone who has planned a meeting at a hotel can tell you about the IT rape. My favorite is the $600 daily rental on a $1500 projector.

Screw Marriott. I paid $15 a day for internet/WiFi in my room to figure out it's not available in the conference/ball rooms. The conference has to pay to make WiFi available there.

Amateurs. The new Music City Center is like $38/day for WiFi and I guarantee you they are blocking data in their conference rooms. You have to get near a window to get LTE or a phone signal and once the doors are closed in the conference rooms your phone becomes a brick.
