Sony Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact review

Before I even open the box, I know that Sony’s new smartphones are going to be a big deal. They have no obvious spec weaknesses and are going up against the iPhone by emphasizing what’s probably its biggest shortcoming: battery life. With durable, waterproof designs, advanced cameras, and the greater flexibility of Android, the new Xperias strive to be the best thing on the smartphone market, no matter the size or the operating system.
IT TOOK ME NEARLY THREE DAYS TO DRAIN THE Z3 COMPACT’S BATTERY
One of my biggest challenges with this review was figuring out ways to use up these phones’ batteries. It took me two days and 20 hours to drag the Z3 Compact’s battery to below 10 percent. Even on the day when I went out shooting sample photos and video with the Z3 Compact, I was only able to eat up about a third of its charge. The Galaxy Alpha, which accompanied it on the trip, was in need of a recharge in the evening having been fully topped up in the morning. The Z3 is just as impressive as the Z3 Compact, though its larger screen consumes more power under intensive use and leads the bigger phone to run out of juice a little bit quicker.
Even without activating the Battery Stamina mode — which minimizes data transfers to improve endurance even further — I found the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact to be the longest-lasting smartphones I’ve tested. There’s an extra Ultra Stamina mode, to make the most of the last few drops of power remaining, and a power consumption monitor that can tell you if some apps are being particularly greedy. Sony has put together an excellent combination of the biggest possible batteries, the most efficient possible processor, and some of the most useful power management software around.

Why doesn't Sony sell these phones more widely in the US? It's mind boggling. It will be a nice change of pace from the Samsungs, LGs and the HTCs.

How come the batteries are badass in the reviews but they don't last but a day in real life?

I'm getting the compact some time next week. I Will report back what the battery is like.

I was waiting for this phone, but I don't know when it's coming out sigh. Going with the iPhone 6+ instead.

Sony is making an announcement Oct. 9. May or may not have the z3 compact.

Got mine in today!
Really like the size of the phone. Not a big fan of Sony's skin but its not to bad. There are some nice cusrimizations features that i wont lose from having a custom rom on the nexus 5.
Replaced as many stock apps as I could with google apps. Wish I could install the google dialer... Just have to wait for cuetome ROM to come out.

Too early to tell anything about the battery?

Engadget reviewed it also and gloated on the god-tier battery life

Yea. I'm gong to have to cycle two or three times before I can really test it.

How is the camera on the Z3 compact? Does it take nice pictures? Is the camera app fast?
I know the Z3 compact doesn't have a metal frame...does the transparent plastic frame feel cheap to you?

quote:idk haven't used it. But I do know that to take good pictures you have to do manual mode BC the auto mode sucks right now. The app takes the pictures fast but the settings are clunky.

My first battery drain and I have an hour of Screen on time and only 10% drain. Mostly browsing the web, taking a couple photos, watching YouTube video and using the flashlifht .

Been looking to get the new Nexus, but the Z3 Compact is the one phone I can see being better. Sony really did a great job with these phones

16g of internal? Really? Even with SD storage, why do these phone manufacturers continue to produce 16gb storage devices? What a joke.

Its been a joke for along time. Sucks
16 hours on battery, 52% left, 4.5 hours screen on time. Battery is legit
